Re: Time to Man Up and Go Under My Crawl Space

I'm gonna go ahead and Google crawl space.

EDIT: I'm gladon't have one of those. Looks like it could harvest some pretty nasty creatures down there. I'll stick with my attic. LOL

However, through time things have worn down and sometimes I find that I have to go underneath the beast and address some issues.

I hate it. In fact, I'm afraid of doing it. For one thing, we have what they call camel crickets. They look like spiders but they jump all over the place with no aim or direction. The next thing of course is it's dark under there. Dark, cool and quiet. Any noise sets me off.

Needless to say, I have to gear up to go down there. I put on a long shirt, jeans..making sure my whole body is covered. Heck, I'd even wear my son's Iron Man helmet if it fit.

So, I can relate if you have done this. If you have no issues with it, you are a bigger man then me. The only thing I find is the more I do it the more I build my confidence. But just yesterday one of those camel crickets jumped on me and I poured my whole neighborhood a tall glass of profanity that is probably still echoing through the greater Charlotte, NC area.
Just think of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and you'll be fine.

I heard all the co-motion and met him in the yard as he was running for his truck. He told me he ran into a nest of snakes in our crawl space.

Needless to say I didn't want my wife to hear that if it was really the case. I asked him to calm down and relax,I would do fix the problem with a little help on his end. I grabbed my .45 and started for the crawl space. I asked him to hold the light for me as I went under. I got in there and saw a huge black snake and a few smaller ones in the same corner of the crawl space. I didn't shoot them because my brain kicked in and didn't want myself or the cable guy to catch a ricochet. I got a bayonet and a broom stick and went to work. Came to find out they were all Copperheads. I also ran into a couple of Wolf spiders down there.

        I feel your pain.
Geez.... I would have pooped on myself.

LOL I remember having to go up under the house with my dad several times--crawling on your belly. I was like 11-12 at the time. Not fun if you are scared of tight dark places. Just gear up and hope nothing bites you.

And take a shower right after.

I haven't actually gone into my crawlspace, mainly because I hate closed spaces. I hate any bug that jumps, and frogs also because they jump. Our crawl space flooded a couple of years ago, and we had 5 or 6 frogs get under there and swim around for awhile. We could hear them all over the house. Needless to say we installed a sump pump the next day.

When I lived with my parents in college, I moved to the basement, and had camel crickets in my closet. Those things are creepy, especially when I found one next to me on my pillow at 3 am.

oh oh oh.... almost forgot my story.... It's not as scary as snakes, but if you're like my wife and terrified of birds it's REAAAL Baaaaad.

We have a microwave over the oven that has a vent that leads to the outside. Birds, looking for a warm home over the winter, lifted up the vent, and crawled on in. For a couple days...on and off...we heard flapping, and other noises coming from behind the microwave. Then one day, came home from work, and their were no noises. The birds, or whatever it was, found a way out right? Wrong. Then came the smell, and the inevitable task of pulling out the microwave.

When I finally had to pull out the microwave, I had my wife standing right there behind me. Pulled out the appliance, and immediately saw a beak sticking out. I said look babe...it's a dead bird, with gloves on I reach back there and find another dead bird, and another...turns out 4 FOUR birds went in there...only to die.

What was funny, was after I identified there was one dead bird, my wife went running and screaming upstairs into our bedroom, and didn't come back downstairs until the next day...after everything had been cleaned, disposed of, etc.

The way she took of running, like her hair was on fire, just had me cracking up...it brings a smile to my face even as I type this.

It's funny I stumlbed across this. I've been putting off going into my crawl space since we bought our house. 6 yrs now.

I want to hook up my ice machine and it's all ready and everything all I have to do is run the hose through the floor and up to the fridge but I haven't built up the courage to do it yet.

I did run my surround sound through my attic though but that took alot of courage to even do that. I hate dark spaces with creepy crawlys.

I just googled it too and I realized that my grandparents house has a half basement half crawlspace. I remember when I was about 7 I was playing in their basement and saw a hatch on the sidewall so I opened it and looked in and I think I had nightmares for about a week. I thought it was a tomb lol.

I had my crawl space (1/2 basement, other half is finished) sealed up (all vents) a couple of years ago and a fancy lining put on the whole thing except for the ceiling where pipes and such are located. Before that it was a pretty terrifying place, now it's just a sterile white plastic sheet lined room that is easy to get in and out of, no bugs or critters anywhere!

That is so funny. My Aunt and Uncle had the same thing. It was in the wall. We would go down there and play floor hockey but that hole in the wall was so creepy. I have no idea what it was for or what it led to.

I hated going down into my crawl space the rest of the day even after a shower I still felt like I had "stuff" crawling on me. I'm 6 foot and 260 pounds so just getting down there was a pain and it takes forever. Now I have a basement.

Re: Time to Man Up and Go Under My Crawl Space

We have a crawlspace in our house under the kitchen. Fortunately there's no way to get into it. It looks as if they tried to dig out a crawlspace in the clay/sandstone and couldn't get much of one constructed. We had to cut the floor up in the kitchen to lay new sewage lines.

My parents have a crawlspace under their kitchen as well and my father had to dig it out to put in new plumbing/electrical when he was remodeling. He said he ran across all sorts of critters in there, but being a contractor he said he's used to it.

Finally, we had an old wood stove and one day a squirrel climbed down the chimney and chewed the gasket holding the flu shut and got into the house. The cat chased it all over the place breaking everything in sight, until finally the squirrel hid in a cup and let me take it outside. I grabbed it by the tail and threw it about 30 feet into the air. The stupid thing landed in a tree and ran off to tell the tale to his squirrel friends.

If I recall correctly (it's been a few years), around $1,500. Seems pricey for what they actually do, but I have no complaints on the results.
