Just looking at the largest contracts in sports history and...

holy crap some of these are insane!!!

So judging by this if you want to make HUGE money playing sport you'd go with:

    1. Baseball (14 in the top 20)
    2. Motor sport (F1) (2 in the top 10)
    3. Basketball (4 in the top 20)
    4. Football (1 in the top 20)

Whoever is Rashard Lewis and Jermaine O'neal's agent needs a raise.

No soccer players on that list? I'm not surprised but still pretty dumbfounded that baseball has the entire top 10 except for 2 F1 drivers, though I'm equally dumbfounded by the fact that the drivers are getting 40 and 50 million per year, holy crap thats nuts.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

I knew the Vernon Wells deal was a bad one but holy geez I didn't realize he has the 17th largest deal in sports right now.

yeah no transfer fee's and the deal like Beckham's which was something ridiculous (250 mil or something) but included a host of other added on money for things other than playing so that didn't count.

Those contracts are obviously the biggest overall contract and not the highest average per year because the baseball ones are often pretty long and Michael Vick has/had the biggest overall deal in the NFL but Eli Manning makes more per year. Obviously this does not take any endorsements into play either or we would have Tiger and Michael Schumacher (and maybe Roger Federer) etc on that list.

Wow, Rashard Lewis makes around 2 mil per season more than Kobe. How many rings does he have??!! Ridiculous!

Basically, if you want to make a lot of money, become a baseball star and play for the Yankees.

Well, actually, the top money makers per year are Kimi Räikkönen, Fernando Alonso, and Michael Schumacher, so maybe you should pursue a Formula 1 career. Hell, Räikkönen's salary per-year is worth almost twice as much as A-Rod's salary.

Of course, endorsements and the like mean that this list isn't all that relevant to the players' actual incomes.

                    Why?

Baseball is the only US sport without a salary cap. If basketball and football didn't they'd be highly represented in the top 10.

In previous salary cap structures, the NBA had the largest total contract at one time (KG) and still has the highest per year of any sport (Jordan).

How did MJ get in that "highest single year" contract? Did they change the rules since then or has their just not been another veteran worth the max (the max goes up the longer a player is in the league doesn't it?)?

It would be interesting to see how big football salaries would be if they didn't have a cap. I mean one player can't have as big an impact on a team's fortunes as say a basketball player but the sport is more popular so that would usually equal more money.

He had 2 years where he was paid 30 and 33 million.

They've changed the rules for what you can offer now.

One reason sports make me sick to my stomach at times.

We've got people making hardly enough to get them by who are doing far more important work for our world, yet some guy got good at hitting a ball with a bat for entertainment and makes at the least hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

99% of people doing "more important work" and getting paid significantly less are easily replaceable.

Elite athletes are not easily replaceable. If billions are going into sports, what exactly should be done with the money if it doesn't go to the players?

And to make that they have helped price tickets outside of that which the average American could afford. I guess it's better than the owners making it and generally uneducated bafoons with millions is good for the local economies at least.
