    Re: Your gruesome injury stories..

I've had toenails ripped off in my baseball playing days and the screwed up knee issues from football and basketball....etc....
    But...
Probably the scariest was when I wasn't even a teenager yet. I was standing at the outside door talking to my mom. My sister came to the door with a dress on a hanger to ask something about it. After sister was done she turned to go back into the house and the hook of the hanger jammed in my right eye. She panicked and let go of the dress so there I was standing in the door with a freaking dress hanging out of my eye. My mom comes running up and pulls the hanger out.

Luckily it was just to the outside of my eyeball.... but it did leave a nice scar that was visable for years.

And I think I pooped my shorts...

Did the toenails grow back and, if so, how long did it take?

My nails grew back...But I got lucky. Doctors said that I had a 40% to lose both nails...But I got both.

I can't remember exactly, but I guess she was essentially shaving parts of her ankle bones every time she sprained it. She went to a specialist and had special shoe inserts developed. There was something wrong with her gait that made her prone to sprains, so the inserts correct that.

I used to be really prone to sprains myself. I sprained my ankle pretty bad in basketball in 9th grade. We were at practice--and I remember having a really good practice because I'm usually terrible, so I was happy to be doing well--and we were going over press break. I was playing at mid court on scout defense and the kid who got the inbounds pass launched the ball to half court to one of our big men. I went to jump to get the ball (I didn't), and when I came down, my foot hit off his leg, turning my foot sideways. I was coming down so quickly and was so close to the ground when it happened that my foot never got back to a normal position, and I basically landed on the side of my foot with all my weight after jumping as high as I possibly could. It hurt. I missed the next game, and I would have played a ton during the game because we won by like 50 points.

The last time I remember spraining it was during a flag football game freshman or sophomore year. I was running directly toward the sideline to grab a kid's flag, and I ran out of bounds and stepped on someone's gym bag. It wasn't too bad. I'm sure it would have been worse had I just rolled it in the grass instead of on a soft gym bag.
Yeah, if I have another serious sprain I'll have someone look at it...I don't really "casually" sprain it, whenever I do it's deserved lol

It's not an issue, but if I was a pro athlete or something I'd know my ankle was a little weaker now...As it is I can play whatever I want and be fine, I just wear a brace or tape it up for soccer and whatnot where it's easy to turn an ankle.

The only serious injury I had was when I was 9. I was hit by a car going about 40 mph as I was riding into the car. I was in the cinders on my road and right in front of my house when the car either swerved or a blind person was driving and shattered the windshield. Then, flew up 10 feet in the air and landed on my head. Fractured my skull, and this happened without a helmet on. I was life-flighted to Children's Hospital in Columbus and stayed there a week. Three of those days I was in the ICU, it was certain that I was going to make it, but I'm still here. My whole body was black and blue and sore for about a month or two.

This has led to many other injuries, but nothing this serious.

Glad you're ok...I wouldn't label this an injury when I could label it a miracle.

Only one didn't. Well it didn't correctly. It grew in but it's about 4 times thicker than usual and freaky looking. lol

Yeah I've heard they grow in differently, if at all. Oh well, I blew it, I had 10 good toenails, I was living the high life and didn't even know it.

When I was a kid, my friends and I were wrestling in someone's yard. There was a pile in the middle and I got up on a rock, held my hands out with the I love you sign in both and shouted out, "Superfly Jimmy Snuka!" I then landed on mybelly and hands but my pinky bent to the back and left and I broke it. In a lot of pain, I started running home. I asked my friend for a ride but he refused saying his back tire was almost flat.

                    That's all I got.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

                      Re: Your gruesome injury stories..

                      1) I got hit by a car while skate boarding. I was cutting in front of a alley and it was my fault. I never looked, next thing I know I heard the tires squealing. I look up and BAM caught a chest full of a F-150 grill. It threw me out into the intersection. I got skid up on my back and elbows, but considering it was a big *** truck. I got up and walked away pretty alright. Other than some bruises and scrapes

                      2) Broke my thumb and dislocated it at same time. I was making a save on a basketball going out of bounds. We had those bleachers that you hook up a electronnics device to open and close. There is a wood flap at the bottom to hide where it plugs in at. After I made the save, I got to put my hand down to prevent me slamming into the bleachers. Well there was coke, on the floor where my hand landed. So my hand slid, which broke my thumb (looked like L). Then my hand slides UNDER this wooden flap. So when I felt the pain, I jerked and pop went the dislocation of it also. Right hand was jacked up for a while.

                      3) Broke just about every finger in my hand playing Wide Receiver in highschool. Laying out for balls, hands tied up in face masks, or just getting hit in the back as you making a catch on a curl route. Throws you towards the ball, sometimes ending up with the ball catching fingers head on. Quick little pop.

                      4) Skate boarding I have a ton, 2 that stick out to me the most. We kept grinding this big kinked rail at the court house. Well 3rd or 4th time doing it, the board came out from under me. My legs ended up wrapped around the support post going down to the ground. So all my momentum going forward was suddenly stopped and it jerked me head first into the concert. Lucky I had a helmet on. The one and ONLY time I ever wore one. I wore it that day just for that rail because it was steep as all hell and very dangerous.

Last one was the one that still haunts me to this day. I was skating and making my way around traffic. Well I go to cut behind this truck, as I do so. I feel this slap to my forehead and then a big *** jerk and it rips me off my board to my back. This guy had a PVC pipe with nails through it. The end nail caught me right above my left eye about middle way up on my forehead. When it entered, it hooked a nerve and pulled it to the surface. Blood gushing all over my face, I make my way home and go to the doctor. Got all stitched up and went back home. Only draw back to it, was it brought the nerve close to the surface. So any contact to my forehead in that area sends this shocking white light to my left eye. Really painful and weird as all hell. I can place my finger over it, and roll it around a little. Feels like a little ball of pain lol

                      5) I also have one from boxing. My mouth piece split a gland in my lower lip. So instead of the mucus gland pumping out mucus to the surface to my mouth. It got severed INSIDE my lip. So my lip was filling up with this gooey liquid and then it would pop after couple days. I then had to go to a oral surgeon and they had to remove the gland. All cause I caught a shot in a manner that pinched the mouth guard on my lower lip.

It is weird looking back at some of these. Because I was not injury prone. I did suffer alot of injuries but I played or did a lot of contact sports/activities.

I've had injuries with worse outcomes, but for immediate pain and shock it would have to be when I cracked my right wrist in the 4th grade.

Messing around at the playground, I tripped and just jammed it on the ground. I walked to some shade and my vision was just completely dark except every person had like a neon glow to them. I could hardly see facial features just that greenish glow. I didn't tell anybody about it though. I've kept injuries to myself for the most part my whole life.

The pain kept hurting but eventually the vision thing faded away as I went through the rest of the school day. Very weird experience.

What do you mean you cracked it? A minor fracture? If so, did you end up getting a cast?

After a lifetime of stupid things that made injury a daily thing...including a decade plus of Indy wrestling (that made me realize that beyond the ear thing, Mick Foley was just listing common stuff.) my two "worst" injuries had nothing to do with dangerous activities.

The worst sounding, but not actually that painful, was while carrying a unplugged nail gun with the safety on...it shot a finishing nail deep into my testicles. It thankfully missed anything important but comedy abounded as as the ambulance called it in the dispatch and she asked if was a suicide attempt and then I had to take so many X-Rays from so many different angles (which I'm sure was for the next office party) that the radiologist had me about break dance posing on the table.

The actual worse physical injury that ever happened to me (worse than bones breaking and spine damage) was while mowing with my shirt off the blades whipped a Sweetgum tree gumball into my exposed nipple.

This is not the one that dropped me like a gunshot...but here for those unfamiliar with the plant in question.

Without a doubt the worst shot of pain I've ever felt

                              Re: Your gruesome injury stories..

I've been pretty lucky injury-wise. I guess my worst would be breaking my wrist while playing tennis. I think I was like 12 or so, it had rained that morning so the courts were kind of slick but manageable. My buddy hit a dropshot so I ran towards the net to get it, but I slipped on the white line and fell forward onto my wrist. My hand was curled, so my wrist landed directly on the ground and then my body landed on top of it, I heard a loud snap and just stayed on the ground. I had a cast for the rest of the summer. :P

Just recently, I was playing indoor soccer and this guy on the other team was about to rip a shot on goal, I was running from behind to cover so I stuck my foot in to win the ball. He ends up taking my foot with the ball, and my left leg was planted, so my body weight was going forward as I fell but my left leg stayed grounded. It felt like I tore something in my left knee, so I got up straight away and just hopped off the field. I stretched out my knee until I could put weight on my left side and I ended up just walking it off and playing the rest of the game. I think I just hyperextended it or something, but it hurt like hell.

Another soccer one, I sprained my ankle during one game and I didn't play for like 2 weeks and my ankle felt fine so I figured I was ok to play. 2 minutes into the game, I tried to break up a pass and lunged towards the ball, my right foot (same side I sprained my ankle on) lands on the ball instead of just in front of the ball, so I end up rolling my ankle badly because my foot slipped off the ball with all the weight I was putting on it. Luckily, the indoor place had one of those air casts with an icepack inside, so I just iced it the rest of the night and taped it up for a few days before it started feeling better. I decided to stop playing for like 3-4 weeks.
                              Blind to this impending fate
We let the world carry our weight
It's back breaks with every mile
But we all live in denial

I don't actually know if I cracked it I just fell on it really hard and it hurt like mad for a long time. I didn't ever get it checked out. The main thing that freaked me out at that age was just having that fainting vision for a while without actually passing out.

It doesn't hurt now but if I roll it around it has a little 'pop' in it.
