Re: Do you worry a lot?
Inside my mind, I'm always worrying. I dwell on the stupidest, most unimportant things.
But I do my damndest to hide every bit of it. It doesn't always work, but I've had many occasions where people will tell me how calm I am under pressure when I know inside my mind I was freakin' lol
I also tend to think of the "worst case scenario". And I think of it because if I think it could happen, it won't. It's funny, actually, because I think of the worst case scenario, then logic kicks in and says, "Dude, that's not going to happen and if it does, I can't really control it," and I force it out of my head.
Recent example: on a flight, I was thinking, "Oh man, what if we crash, what will I do, how will I act?" Then Mr. Logic barged in and said, "Well it doesn't matter because you can't predict the future. You can only choose the options when the situation is presented. And your life is in the pilot's hands now anyway, so stop worrying and just enjoy your flight."NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: Do you worry a lot?
The only thing that worries me is paying the bills on time. I imagine If I had a job that I enjoyed and payed well I would be perfectly content in life. Basically I am trying to get over to Iraq or Afghanistan to pay the bills, So yea I worry more about money than getting blown up.Originally posted by J. ColeFool me one time that's shame on you. Re: Do you worry a lot?
My two main concerns and sources of worry have always been money and my family (really just my wife and kids).
However, as I've gotten older and spent several years in my current job and have been able to accumulate wealth and get rid of the main source of my financial worries (credit card debt) and build a nest egg my financial worries have become a much, much smaller worry in my life. Big purchases still cause a bit of concern, but mostly because I want to make sure I'm making the best choices and not handicapping my family.
#1 kind of takes care of a big part of #2. Because we have a bit of financial freedom, I don't often worry about whether my family is being taken care of as I know they are.
I discovered in college that worrying was just a waste of time. I once got my self so psyched out about the importance of a test that 10 or 15 minutes went by and I found that I couldn't focus on the words of a single question and nearly had a panic attack. I was able to talk myself out of that bit of anxiety and since then have just basically realized that it's not worth it...for me.
I also remember before that worrying about the littlest things and just getting frustrated and upset over the stupidest things. I would throw a fit and yell at my parents if they were late to pick me up from school for a dentist appointment thinking that being 5 minutes late to the dentist would be the end of the world. Or if I missed the smallest assignment in class, it would just completely ruin my day.
I look back now and realize that I worried far too much in school and would have had a much better time and much better memories had I not taken things so serious and spent so much time worrying...and I've kind of stuck with that outlook now.
I have one life and I can either spend it worrying about things or enjoying things and I'd much rather enjoy it. IMO, Being prepared is different than worrying. It's nice to get to a movie or concert slightly early or on time, but I also understand it's not the end of the world if I don't. I just try and make the best of whatever situation I am in. I'd hate to be 75 years old, sitting down with my grand kids telling them about all the stuff I missed out on because I was too busy worrying about what could go wrong instead of enjoying everything else that was going right.Last edited by Trevytrev11; 07-22-2010, 09:05 AM.Comment

Re: Do you worry a lot?
If what your worrying about doesn't happen then you suffered for nothing. If it does happen you suffered twice.
Another thing I use to stop worrying for stuff like tests is to remember that I am responsible for the effort, not the outcome.Comment

Re: Do you worry a lot?
You know what you say Pete makes complete sense but for someone who is a chronic worrier it's like saying to a fat person "you shouldn't eat a triple whopper, it's bad for you"...it makes sense but i just goes against that person's nature.
Plus, like I said, everyone does a certain amount of worrying. Although many may call it planning. Like if you have a car payment don't you think "Ok I need to make sure I have $200 on August 1st for my car payment". That may not be what most people call worrying per se but it's sort of what I'm talking about.
Now that I think about it maybe I should have said I have a nonstop mind that can't stop thinking about all things coming up as what my issue is more than outright worrying. I do my share of worrying, no question, but I also think my issue is a I do a ton of planning/projecting/forecasting in my head and that gets so freakin' old man.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Do you worry a lot?
I know what you mean about the planning stuff. I was in a meeting on Tuesday on the other side of campus, and it started pouring down rain and I didn't have an umbrella. Instead of paying attention to the meeting, I start thinking of buildings I can cut through, shortcuts I can take, etc to avoid getting soaked walking in the rain. By the time the meeting was over, the rain had stopped, but I had wasted a good 45 minutes of time thinking about it.Comment

Re: Do you worry a lot?
Cardsfan2222 - That's exactly what i'm talking about!! Perfect example!! It's like an aspect of one's mind that exists for a purpose, without it you drift through life with all kinds of problems from not being able to plan...but when it takes on a greater role in your brain than it should then you end up wasting SO much time.
For example I recently had tickets to go to a rock concert. I had a toe injury though and stressed all week wondering if I'd be able to do the walk. I was wondering "how far will i have to walk?", "will my toe bleed?", "could it get infected?" and "what if something comes up and I need to go to a doctor and I'm at the concert - do they have doctors there?" and on and on it went.
Then I get up there to the concert, get out and walk about a half a mile, talking to my friend the whole time and voila, we're there. It took all of about 10 minutes, if that. And of course once we are there then I think back about how ALL WEEK I had all these questions and all this stress about the whole thing. Then it just made me sick how stupid I was with wasting my time on that.
The funny thing is my girlfriend did tell me "Oh you'll be fine, quit worrying" and I just couldn't do it. It's very exasperating!!!
However, like I said, I'm glad I do have the planning/worry trait though, I just wish I could tone it down some. My younger sister is the complete opposite. She has zero worry or planning in her head. She will have her electric bill come due with a shutoff notice for July 10th and not even think about it one bit until the evening of July 9th. If you ask her on July 8th what she's going to do she'll just shrug and say "I dunno". It just blows my mind how anyone can think like that. I'd be a constant worrier/planner trying to figure out how to keep my electric on from the INSTANT I received a shutoff notice!Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Actually it's funny you bring that up because that's how I got a girlfriend, LOL. I did everything opposite of what I thought and felt I should do. It worked! Not sure how well it'd work for other aspects of my life though.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20
