Re: EI lasts up to 99 weeks in America ... wow

For those who have been looking for employment during this time, this is not directed at you.....

This is not about assistance.... this is about creating sheep. Does anyone know why some reports point to the unemployment rate seemingly improving somewhat? Because many, many people admittedly have stopped looking. Why? Well, that's where this thread started. Welfare, at its' point of origin was never designed to be what it is today.

Think about your kids, nieces, nephews, young students, etc. Want them to be listless, mediocre, incompetent slugs? Do all their work for them.

      /end sarcasm

Anyway, yeah, it's been awful at times even to the point I had my last home foreclosed on, but at least I'm doing something about it. I decided to go back to school and finally finish my degree because I needed to work smarter, not harder and could ill afford to put myself through the grinder like that, again. I realized the really hard way that working extremely hard, putting one's life on the side, and being overly loyal to a company will do nothing for you when it comes time for them to cut some budgets to appease stock-holders.

In that time, I've applied for countless jobs - my spreadsheet is easily over 300 detailed lines long of jobs to which I've applied throughout the last 2 years - all of which I've been qualified and overly qualified for only to rarely have a call back. The interviews in where I've been very close to a job I lost out on merely because I wasn't willing to take a massive paycut for a high-level job - think of it as being a decorated sports athlete in his prime being asked to play for the league minimum.

As of June I lost my benefits and things have gotten even worse to the point where my school is having a hard time finding openings for work study openings for a 4.0 multi-Dean's List student. The economy is in the crapper and even fast food places aren't willing to hire competent people such as myself for fear of being either undermined, outworked, out-shown by a subordinate or whatever reason.

Luckily, my fiance and I have scaled back on our living, were smart when we bought our super affordable home, and have lived within our means before any of this ever happened. My savings are gone, but at least my debts have been cleared as well.
Just I like said earlier, not everybody is abusing the system (clearly you aren't) but I have no doubt other people are.

If you're suggesting that people that have stopped looking for jobs, or those that are on welfare are not tallied in the unemployment rate then you're wrong.

That's not true. The "real" unemployment rate is always higher than the official unemployment rate.

Persons are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work. Actively looking for work may consist of any of the following activities:

          Contacting:
An employer directly or having a job interview
A public or private employment agency
          Friends or relatives
A school or university employment center
Sending out resumes or filling out applications
          Placing or answering advertisements
          Checking union or professional registers
Some other means of active job search

thanks for the link and you're right.
If we counted all of those persons not participating in the labor force as unemployed then the rate would be at least 30%. But that's been the case now just as much as it was 25yrs ago. And my guess is that holds true for most rich developed countries.

I think he was agreeing with you.

This is the same issue I had a few years ago before finding my current job. I didn't need too much money to survive; just needed a little. But no one would call me back and I suspect it was because I had a degree and too much work experience. Why would a smaller place hire me when they know I can just jump into a higher paying opportunity when it comes up?

I tried the temp job route but ended up turning down my first job offer because I had received a job offer to the production company I'm at now. So in some ways, those people were right because jumping to the higher paying job that fit my field is exactly what I did there.

The proliferation of the internet was the worst thing to happen for the worldwide employment market.

The competitive advantage of knowledge is all but gone. You can google just about anything and learn it quickly. Colleges degrees are so diluted that getting a job interview has become winning a resume lottery.

I don't see how this problem ever gets fixed.

There's still something to be said for interpersonal and problem solving skills. That's what separates a great candidate from the good ones. Anyone can read a book. Applying that knowledge is something that not everyone has. A good interviewer can bring that out in their candidates and make a better decision. Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen.

Another problem with unemployment is that our country has changed massively in the last 50+ years. There is no longer as big of a sector in manual labor as there were back then seeing as most of our manufacturing companies have gone the way of heavy automation meaning less human bodies needed. On top of that, the influx of immigrants has made getting those manual labor based jobs that much harder to get. So right now, in essence, there is a huge logjam of millions of people in this country with high school & below educated levels cramming for less and less jobs.

Staying with my parents right now. It's hard to admit that. I do on the side jobs for friends for extra money I need to survive. But right now I'm with my parents. I live in a small town. Jobs are very very hard to find right now. Trying to go back to school and finish my degree up in computers. That might help me out alot more. For now with parents.
