Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
I would say this is true, but my father-in-law has an associate's in engineering and has about 30 years of experience. He was laid off and has been looking for a new job, but usually loses out to people with bachelors who have less experience.
However, if my kids ever wanted to become a plumber or electrician, I would be in favor of it. Can't ever outsource those jobs to India...Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
True...but even as a fireman...the "lowest" on the rung in the F.D. I'm FAR north of that number......but here is the funny thing. Until a few years ago, you didn't need any college to get promotions within the F.D. Anyone who could take and pass the exams could gain a promotion to Lt.....Capt.....and Chief(and then even jump the next level to Division Chief). Those jobs pay close to 160+ a year. Now they instituted a requirement to have a college degree to be a Chief. Overnight. Any different? Better chiefs because of college? Actually, I find it the opposite. Guys who know their work...the ins and outs who truly deserve to be leading these guys are now relegated to Lt. because they don't have and don't wish to go back to school in order to get a promotion.
I'll follow my salty 30 year Lt. with a G.E.D. any day over a "Chief" with 5 years in the field but went to college so now he's the big guy.

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
True Ceb...I did try and qualify my statement.I believe you're FDNY which puts you in a position that the vast majority of the country doesn't have even the prospects of having.
Blue collar, city/state union jobs in 4 incredibly rich cities (DC, NYC, Boston, Chicago) and New Jersey (depending on what happens federally Michigan and Cali may be put here too) are great jobs but the vast majority of the country doesn't have those available to them.
Your job outside the triangle of DC/Chicago/Boston wouldn't be anywhere near as good of a job.
For comparison, FDNY after one year pays more (including benefits) than the average Atlanta FD pay and is more than double (including benefits) the average pay after 5 years.

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
This is exactly how I see it. Often times the education itself isn't what is important, but the fact that you can prove that you are able to start, balance and finish what is difficult for many people. The strength's needed for one to possess a college degree are often the ones that employers are looking for in a new employee.
I imagine that without knowing the details, many employers probably look at an application of those with just a diploma and probably assume that they are not motivated, take the easy way out or are just happy with settling and not trying to better themselves. Obviously this is probably not the case in most situations, but I can't help believe this is how many companies view this group of people.Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
Absolutely true. If you are skilled in a demanding trade, you are going to get paid a good amout of money for it.
However, with most blue collar jobs, you are exposed to harder work and often more dangerous work than others. Physically, you are going to have to work harder for your money and also as a result, your body is probably going to breakdown a little faster.
I imagine retirement is probably a little more physically enjoyable for a guy that spent most of his career in a comfy chair behind a desk than one who spent it crawling under houses or taking apart engines or running into burning buildings.
My father was a carpenter/contractor and he made a good living for our family, but he pays for it now. He has bad knee's, elbows, a bad back, etc. I also remember a lot as a kid that often times he would be exhausted after a day of work and it would hard for him to have the energy to come home and play with his kids at times.Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
A little off topic, but this thread made me think of this...
I had a "friend" in high school who used to make fun of the "ease" of my dad's job (corporate loan officer), saying stuff like "better watch out for paper cuts". His dad's job...junior high school gym teacher.Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
This is the way I feel about it. Right now, in most sectors of corporate America, a bachelors degree is probably the bare minimum. Now just because you have a degree doesn't mean your guaranteed to get the job. BUT you have to have the paper in order to play.I don't know. Basically a college degree is to our generation what a high school diploma was to our parents' generation. That's not going to change going forward; if anything, the trend will continue and graduate degrees will be to our kids' generation what a college degree is today.
I do agree with you more generally, though. I hate little societal power games like this.
In other words, if you want to get into the arena to watch the game, you need a ticket.
And I do agree that having a bachelors degree doesn't make you more qualified than the next person. BUT in most cases, when the candidates are close to even, the degree is the deciding factor. It's not fair BUT this is how most of corporate America thinks.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm XComment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
This is my point to an extent. There are people who are qualified for jobs that have both the intelligence and work ethic to proficiently do a job...sometimes he/she didn't have the $$$ to go to college or was (frankly, like me) too ignorant and moronic to realize the importance of simply "having" a degree. To whomever stated that a degree simply shows that one is intelligent, I disagree with that statement. There are plenty of fools who have a degree...
Honestly, what are jobs which require college degrees that a person w/o one couldn't do without proper training (most of which is usually given at hire anyways)?Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.
It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
I don't think most companies look at it as just a sign of intelligence, but as a sign that here is a person that had enough motivatation to stick with and finish something (that they were not forced to do and is not mostly enjoyable) for four or five years. I think this is a trait most companies look for in employee's - dedication.
I think employers see that and believe that they can be a bit more confident that the person they are hiring is likely dedicated enough to stick with and complete their tasks.
When you just have an application and a resume to go by and see that someone didn't attempt to go to college or dropped out of college, it probably is going to raise some questions when the majority of the other people competing for that job have done so.Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
Also there alot of jobs with huge earning potential sales role like financial advisors roles....which dont require a college education.
These jobs require the ability to lie to grandmothers."Good music transcends all physical limits, it's more then something you hear, it's something that you feel, when the author, experience, and passion is real" - Murs (And this is for)Comment
