Some of you guys who live in those states that pay for tuition are lucky. If I had that, I would not be in the military right now.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

Heck yeah, you are some lucky guys living in those states. My whole life my GPA was never lower then a 3.8. Some years it was even a 4.2Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
I know I was lucky to have parents who didn't want me to have any loans coming out of college, and that's the same thing I plan for my kids (at least do as much as I can).
If you stay in state and are able to find grants and whatnot you can usually find some quality deals. It's when you go out of state or do private schools that it gets crazy expensive....Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
Yeah my parents had a pretty high income, but didn't want to pay for any of my college so that kind of screwed me as far as financial aid goes. I graduated with a 3.6 GPA out of high school. I didn't want to have a lot of debt out of college so I went the military route. That state thing where they pay for tuition sounds great and I definently would of taken advantage of that.
When I have a kid, I plan on covering his college expenses so he doesn't have to worry about it.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

Doctors & Lawyers yes, only because you need a legal certificate to work in these fields (& nurses too, probably a slew of other also that I'm not thinking of at the moment), but last time I checked you didn't need a certification to be an engineer. Just look at the goombas who design automobiles zing!Comment

Teachers and Profs need degrees as well. I want to be a professor and to be that at a university you need a doctorate.Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
Professors yes..........teachers not really. Depends on the school district. Because I know some teachers in Indiana and Illinois that don't have a degree and they teaching high school students. Hell one of them is 20 years old and teaching 10th grade History.Comment

Re: College Degrees --> Overrated
Well, a lot of time just to get an interview you need an applicable degree. Depends on what you want to do with your life. There are plenty of folks making a fine living without the aid of a college education. I would tend to think they are exception, though, and not the rule. It just opens up so many more opportunities when you have the degree. I've never been asked for a transcript, but HR staff will check the validity of your resume if you get an offer.Currently playing:

There's a reason professor's are required to have so much education in their respective fields of expertise....it only stands to reason that public school teachers should be held to similar (lesser, but still similar) standards.Comment

...and with the last couple of posts.....this thread is getting ridiculous.
Yep...I'm that guy and there is nothing in college that you need to run a successful business. NOTHING. Common sense, hard work(no college courses for those) will pretty much cover everything.
In my business....I met plenty of other guys who worked at their own business which was a derivative of mine and I'll bet none of them finished college either.
NOW you're starting to overrate the importance of college.
I'll give you guys the medical field...but business? C'mon.

While I was working in management my ex-girlfriend graduated college with a marketing degree and she ended up with a job working for Saturn making 35k a year. In retrospect, I believe that she was always a little jealous that I made much more money than she did even though I didn't have to go through school.
Now, I'm sure that I'm probably more of the exception and not the rule. Honestly, I would always advise someone to go to college because college is a great experience. However, IMHO the only people who really need a college degree are those in the medical field, lawyer's, teacher's and engineers. Almost everyone else is can get their experience through (well for lack of a better word) "experience".
Also, just because you do graduate college doesn't mean your going to be successful. Hell, two of my friends who are the most successful and graduated college don't even have jobs in the fields that their degrees are in.My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague
