Are you older than your boss?
If so, does it ever make you feel weird that somebody younger than you has more authority than you? I don't mean like you are a year older than them (well maybe), but I mean significantly older to the point where they might demean your work or something and you have the ability to say in you head: "Boy, if only you have lived as long as I have you'd know just how incorrect that statement is."

Re: Are you older than your boss?
It's the opposite for me, actually. All 4 of the people I supervise are 45+ and I'm 28.
I think they generally like me. I didn't come in and try to tell them how to do their jobs, I actually learned everything from them first. I think they appreciated that. Now I'm making changes where needed and there hasn't been much resistance.
I think it also helps that I'm slowly doing parts of all their jobs in addition to mine so that I can have a better understanding of their day-to-day jobs. -
Re: Are you older than your boss?
My Squad leader in the Army was a year older than me and it didnt bother me. He would always ask me if it bothered me in a real snarky tone. Now that I look back on it, it was a bit wierd that I looked up to him for leadership, nothing wrong with it though. My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

At my last job I was way older...... Felt totally weird and awkward being told what to do by somebody that is young enough to be your younger sister or brother.Comment

Re: Are you older than your boss?
Sure...some of the Lt's and Capt's I work with are younger than me. But that also means that they most likely have less time than me on the job, which in my dept. is king. Seniority pretty much rules.
So I tell him to check the rig before he has coffee....keep his head in the sink(do the dishes) and he should be okay.

Re: Are you older than your boss?
Sounds like the Infantry. Nothing worse than a Lt. who thinks he knows it all. I had a LT once who kept on tasking Privates to do work around the platoon area, this was considered extremely disrespectful to the NCOs as that is their job. He ended up getting the Axe when he nearly got a squad killed in a Live fire exercise, myself included.Sure...some of the Lt's and Capt's I work with are younger than me. I loved my Division CSM, that guy was a Enlisted mans man who hated officers. He had no problem making a Officer start pushing either, I once saw him smoke a Captain for parking in the handicap spot in front of the PX.Last edited by Cusefan; 09-17-2010, 06:26 PM.My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

Re: Are you older than your boss?
It's the opposite for me also. I'm the leading petty officer and I'm 22. I directly supervise guys who are in their upper 20's. Others are around my age and some are a couple years younger. It was weird at first and I was nervous because some have more time in the Navy only I picked up ranked faster.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

A lot of military(ex) guys in my department.
Just like the field with you guys...it's the firemen who run the firehouse.
Sure, any officer can tell any or all of us to do any particular thing and we will comply NQA.
But if the reason was spite or to gain some sort of facade of superiority ....watch out. The firehouse can be a brutal...BRUTAL place....and worse off....your rep will PRECEDE you(as in not follow you if you know what I mean:wink
..so even if you beat it to another place, the brothers will make sure your first day at your new house will be as miserable as your last one in the old house.
That's why you're more likely to see staff chiefs(as opposed to Batt. or Division Chiefs who are still "in house") who are at HQ be ....ummm...not so nice....they are kind of out of our reach
so to say. Cowards!

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: Are you older than your boss?
At my old job it was the opposite for me, as well. When I transfered to Baton Rouge I was 27 and the sales staff at the store I transfered to ranged in age from 35 to about 60. Most of the older sales associates had been in sales longer than I'd been alive so, they didn't take to kindly to a youngster like me coming in and running things. I took some time but, I eventually gained their trust and we all had a great working relationship. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

Re: Are you older than your boss?
The opposite. I'm 29, the youngest in my company, and presently supervise 12 people in my office. Soon, I may be the Director of Operations where I would supervise all 50~ or so. I have a very good reputation though because I emphasize and model respect and teamwork. People like it when they're respected at all times and they have the opportunity to be a part of the "bigger picture".

Re: Are you older than your boss?
My boss is older than I am. She is like 49 and I am 25. But I supervise the other 5 people that work at our location and they are all older than me. We all get along good though and they know that I know the job good and work just as hard as they do.PSN: King10Sooted
