Re: Are you older than your boss?
I'm 30 and run a company in an allied health field. We only have a relatively small staff that range from 40-62 so i am the youngest by a bit. We all seem to get on pretty well and really the only person who has ever seemed to have any sort of problem with it is the oldest and she is only part time and nearing retirement so it's no biggie. The other staff generally have way more a problem with her than with me anyway.
I could see how an arrogant youngster could easily upset the older staff though so i go out of my way to include others in decision making etc and it seems to work great.Comment

Re: Are you older than your boss?
I'm 33 and have a handful of people that report to me. A few of them are older than me. All of Sr. Mgmt is older than me...mid to late 40's.
Regarding those that are older than me and report to me. To be brutally honest, I don't really care if they like me or feel awkward that I'm younger than them. I've worked awfully hard to get to where I am and work a lot of extra hours to make the department succeed. I know they see that and respect it - as I respect them for the time and effort they put in every day. Which leads me to this - as long as we respect each other and work well together, that's all that matters. If there is ever an issue, I'm very quick to address it and squash it, but I've never seen or heard of an issue due to my age.
Not to mention, the guys that are older have mentioned that they don't want to deal with the daily BS from Sr. Mgmt that I have to deal with (Sr. Mgmt here loves to harp on the dumbest things - even late at night when it could wait until the next morning - I think they do it to make sure we're always on our toes). So they're happy that I'm where I am and basically shield them from that BS.Comment

Yes, being military there are many junior officers (O1-O3) that I am older than. Not really a big deal most differ to my experience and treat me with the respect that I've earned. Everyonce in a while a JO will need to be pulled to the side...

Re: Are you older than your boss?
If your a LT, Dont F with a Pay grade over E-6, It will not end well. I was a E-4 when a butterbar tried Giving me the Business, My Platoon Sergeant chewed his A** out. It was enjoyable. My unit trained some Cadets from West Point and they at least knew there place and were pretty coolYes, being military there are many junior officers (O1-O3) that I am older than. Re: Are you older than your boss?
I was in management for years I always seemed to be the youngest manager, but the staff was for the most part older (restaurant business). I never went in like i was a know it all. I used those older more experienced indivduals to my advantage. I used them to find out what other managers have done before , gauge employees with attitudes or laziness issues and so forth, based on that information i made my decisions how to procede. I was a hard worker and always did what was best for the employee and guest. The employees would see that I would have much respect. Things always went smoother because they knew what kind of manager they had in me. We had fun, but if you stepped out of line I got in that *** and told you bout your self. It worked for me , but upper management were idiots , i had to get out.Comment

Re: Are you older than your boss?
It's weird for me because I work at a TV station in Chicago and I am BY FAR the youngest person here (minus interns). I'm 25 and I'm the full time Media Archivist. The next person is probably 35 and it only goes up.Michigan WolverinesChicago White SoxComment

Re: Are you older than your boss?
I've been a supervisor or manager since I was 19. At first, it felt really awkward telling people three times older than me what to do, but I've become accustomed to it. I've learned that if you work hard, be personable, and act respectful...there's never a problem. I've worked with other young people in management who haven't followed those rules and they've gotten quite the backlash from their employees.Co-Commish of the OS Vets I & II

Re: Are you older than your boss?
Jeez, man...I'm a CPT and if a CSM ever tried smoking me, we would be at it. He can tell whoever his colonel or general and they can smoke me, but a Sergeant Major smoking a Captain just means that CPT is weak. No way it's supposed to go down like that.If your a LT, Dont F with a Pay grade over E-6, It will not end well. Likewise with my LT's. If a NCO ever tried smoking or acting disrespectful towards them, my LT's would get in their behinds so quick it wouldn't even be funny...and you wouldn't want to see me. I guess it's different everywhere though. When I was in garrison, the NCO's had a little more clout. In Iraq though, you just gotta have that discipline.-Rocky Balboa"Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment

Re: Are you older than your boss?
My last boss was 50+, so he was older.
I have no problem with someone younger being my boss, as long as he has experience in the field, he's skilled and knows what he's doing. My Specs:

Re: Are you older than your boss?
The LT parked in a handicap parking spot and tried blowing off the CSM when he went into the store. He had it coming, 99% though there is enough respect between E and O so it almost never comes down to getting smoked. That CSM was nuts though, in Iraq he would shoot wild dogs in the fob with his sidearm, General Mixon ended up taking away his sidearm.Jeez, man...I'm a CPT and if a CSM ever tried smoking me, we would be at it. He can tell whoever his colonel or general and they can smoke me, but a Sergeant Major smoking a Captain just means that CPT is weak. No way it's supposed to go down like that.

When i was a Private my Platoon leader smoked my Squad leader for something really stupid, but he did it infront of joes. if your gonna smoke someone in a leadership role, you do it away from the Privates. That LT I am speaking about was a real POS though, i have no idea how he could have even graduated College, due could barely read. It took like 15 minutes for this guy to read a op order.
I will say this though, I never once had a problem with any officer that went to West Point. This one LT was in ROTC in some college and this was his first assignment out of OTC. I was a team leader and he was making me do stupid little details like getting him coffee or breakfast. His bitch is his RTO, i had my own problems within my team to deal with.Last edited by Cusefan; 09-25-2010, 11:10 PM.My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment
