Re: This is so messed up

I wonder if anything else was going on for him to do this, not that what happened wasn't bad but that's a pretty quick decision from time of the incident to jumping off the bridge.

That's probably what you call "snapping" I guess.

    Sad.

Imagine living with what you perceive to be a brutal secret your whole life, and then having streamed on the internet. Last straw or not, definitely a breaking point for most people

At least we can take (some, not much) solace that the two kids (one girl, one girl) were kicked out of school. Hopefully they get kicked in the face many many times.

What really gets me is that the male student must have known something to plant a webcam.

I know the female student has been charged as well, but I wonder if she'll face the same charges. Not to say she isn't faulty of the entire situation, but I wonder if perhaps she was thrown into it by circumstance and just didn't think through the situation.

Nah, probably not. Those two probably planned the entire thing from the get-go.

The Gay/Lesbian alliance or whatever group it is wants to push for a hate crime

It is hard to prove, though, because who knows if they still would've posted the video had it been of a heterosexual nature. With the current case, though, there is absolutely no way they shouldn't try and push for a hate crime.

The video was streaming, not recorded then posted at a later time.

In my opinion it takes an overwhelming amount of evidence for a hate crime. This seemed like college students being idiots and taking things too far, which I bet has made them feel like the scum of the Earth. I do not believe it is a hate crime.

Ah, I thought he turned on the webcam, saw it going on and then the two of them decided to upload the video after.

Hard to tell if there's enough to prove, but if the motivation was to show that the kid was a homosexual to anyone that wanted to watch, that should be grounds for a hate crime.

Even if not, hopefully these two don't get off easily with the crimes they've been charged with.

I agree that they should be punished to the fullest extent for what they did. I just don't see grounds to consider this a hate crime. Even if he knew he was gay and wanted to show it off, that's not a hate crime to me.

If the motivation of the crime was the fact that the kid was homosexual, I don't see how it isn't a hate crime. However, I don't see any way that a prosecutor could prove that they were motivated due to the homosexual nature of the situation and not just being idiotic kids.

But yeah, as long as the two receive a sufficient punishment, it doesn't matter to me what they get charged with.

Well the kid was an honor student and a very good violin or whatever instrument he played player. From the looks of him, most people probably always joked he was gay because he kind of looks like he was. He also looked like a nerd too.

So my way of thinking when he asked for the room until midnight, his room mate and that girl probably thought hmmm, what would a guy that look like him need the room for himself for ? Wouldn't it be funny if he had a boyfriend or some nerdy looking fat girlfriend ?

Thus they set up the cam in the room because to them it would have been funny either way if it one of them was true. And when they seen him having relations with another male, they instantly thought yeah I always thought he was gay, lets post this on youtube.

Thinking they can have some laughs for the rest of the week. That is pretty much your college campus way of thinking. Pick on the kids that look gay or nerdy.

However from the looks of this kid, he looks like the type of kid that has been picked on his whole life. Instead of going to a big college, he went to a smaller one hoping at least there he wouldn't be picked on as much as say if he went to a Michigan, Ohio St, FSU, etc. Because you know Rutgers, even though they do have sports, it isn't a jock school.

So imagine to go to a school that for the most part is known for its academics where you thought you be safe at and you STILL get made fun of and get blasted on the internet with over a million views.

With a school campus that small, even if he didn't kill himself he would have never made it through the school year there, he would have eventually would had transferred to another school.

Small campus and small town life, everybody knows your business and it is very hard to lay low when something bad or embarrassing happens to you. You would be the talk of the town for YEARS.

Spot on. I don't think it was a hate crime, just some dumb college students teasing/bullying a weird/nerdy/gay kid and didn't realize he might snap...They're still douchebags for what they did though, that wasn't right no matter what happens (ie even if he didn't kill himself).

I think it is a hate crime. It's not hate toward race or sexual preference but it's hate to the point that you don't care enough about a person's own dignity that you purposefully and malignantly make this tape available.

I know that's not something that will stand up in court, but I do think that's what is at the core here. Two people have zero respect for another individual so much that they would do such a thing.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

This is pretty much spot on. There's only so much abuse one can take in their life without going crazy and ending it all. It's also very telling of the way most college kids think. There's the feeling of "oh this is too funny for words let's put this up on the internet and make him the butt of jokes" without thinking of the full consequences.

One would hope there'd be more understanding in this world and to a larger extent it does seem the younger generation is more accepting but we do have cases like this where all rational thought goes out the window and they act like a bunch of douchebags without thinking of the victim. I mean I don't mind a prank or anything like that but this goes beyond the pale.

I'm sure the two who did this didn't expect this to happen and feel like they're scum but that doesn't bring the victim back to life. I hope that there is a stiff punishment meted out.

It's a hate crime in the most broad sense of the word but not so in the strictly legal sense I don't think.

This is such a heinous act, all it takes is the prosecutors to find one witness who heard one of these two make a incendiary comment about homosexual at some point in there life. I think it is safe to say that most of us as some point have done this so I imagine they will find someone.

Do I think this was a Hate Crime, No. Do i think they deserve Prison time reserved for those who commit a hate crime, absolutely.
