    Re: Injuries?

    Ahahahaha. Thanks man.

Actually, It's pretty much back to new. About 20 or so days since I did it. Still kinda hurts but I can do most tasks.

You could, and I'm just throwing this out there, copy and paste the explanation. Cause seriously that looks nasty, and i want to know how that happened.

I'm not going to copy and paste it because I just looked at it and it was a horrible explanation

So I will just tell the story

This was a few years ago, and I was at my first practice for my CYO basketball team. There was this 6'7 guy on our team, and we were doing an intersquad scrimmage to get to know everyone and things like that. Well, I was selected to guard this 6'7 dude. I am 6'0 on a good day.

The point guard throws a lob pass to him, and I try to undercut him and tip the ball away. I jump up, tip the ball away, but when I land, I land on his foot and my ankle twisted. I heard and felt a pop and my immediate reaction was "****, I broke it". So practice stops as I'm on the floor in agony with my eyes tearing up (Yes, the pain was so intense that it made my eyes tear up. Similar to when you get hit in the nose)

They had to call my Dad to come get me so I had to wait a good 20 minutes in the bleachers. I literally felt the swelling on my ankle grow more and more intense as my shoe kept getting tighter and tighter. When my Dad got there, I tried to step with that foot. The pain was so intense when I put even a tiny bit of pressure on it.

So we got to the ER to get X-Rays (I was sure it was broken since I felt and heard a pop) but the X-Ray comes back negative. (I always wanted to say that ) So I ask the Doctor why I heard and felt a pop. His response was basically that I tore multiple if not almost all of the ligaments in my ankle, and the pop was them being torn.

So he fits me with an air cast and some crutches and I'm on my way home.. at 4am. It was maybe a month before I would walk without the crutches.

This happened in December. I re-sprained it (The swelling was actually WORSE this time, but it was no where near as bad) in May playing baseball, and was still on crutches, but I was walking about a week after without them.

          Re: Injuries?

I just recently fractured my right fibula (not a huge fracture, but pretty damn painful). It's my senior year and I'm playing basketball. I played through it, for the first 2 games. Alright, so after our second game my left leg was killing me, and I'm almost positive I fractured my left fibula too (this leg is about twice as bad too). Same symptoms, swelling, pain, etc. So other than sitting out and letting it heal, anyone with any good ideas on what I can do?

Ow, the picture almost looked like you had dislocated something. I'd be really gun-shy of doing anything athletic after an injury like that, ankle injuries always seem really easy to reaggravate, at least for me anyway.

Lol yea, easy to re-aggravate. I did almost the same thing 5 months later and was back on crutches

However, like the radius and ulna in your forearm, the fibula and tibia are critical in properly turning your foot.

I'm guessing by the fact that you played through it and that you said it's not a huge fracture means that it's a non-displaced fracture of the fibula. (Meaning that the bone didn't crack all the way through and separate apart. If it did, you wouldn't have been able to play through it and the sharp ends of the bone would be tearing into the tissue all around it). It sounds cliche, but at this point going to see a doctor to get some x-rays done would be a good idea. Since the fracture was a while ago, the initial swelling that can hide small fractures will have stabilized so the x-rays should be able to pick up any fracture, or the signs of bone growth that appear around a hairline fracture and make them visible on x-rays.

For now, a good thing to do is to wrap your calf/ankle tightly with some bandages to keep you from turning your foot and potentially further separating the fracture, if it is indeed fractured. In addition, taking plenty of vitamin D and calcium supplements to aid the bone growth should be able to speed up the healing process. Thankfully, the fibula receives plenty of blood supply so it doesn't take forever to heal like many of the small bones in your foot and hand/wrist. (Which I know of all too well).

Another good reason to have a doctor take a look at it is to avoid the potential complication of a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism occurs when a clot from the torn tissue in an around the fracture dislodges and is taken up into your venous system. The clot can then move around your body and cause some serious problems. When I broke my foot back in March, I did it right before I had a cross-country flight. The only thing that saved my life was the fact that I had my shoes on and they were laced pretty tightly which compressed the area in and around the fractures. As a result, when the air pressure dropped as we got up to cruising altitude, the clots that were forming were unable to dislodge and move around my body. Heh. I remember how shocked my doctor was when I finally went and saw her a few weeks later. She was at first stunned that I was walking on a foot with 8 fractures in it, some clear through the bone, and also that I had been on a plane for two cross-country flights with a freshly broken bone. She told me I was very lucky that no complications arose and that I must have an insane pain tolerance. (Which I kind of do and why it's unfortunate that my doctors don't all fully understand that because when I go to see a doctor because of pain it's because I REALLY need a pain medication since I can't function any longer).
I saw a doctor about my right fibula, that's why I know that I fractured that one. However, my left fibula/leg started hurting just a few days ago, a few weeks after my right fibula was fractured. My doctor said I could play through it, but if the pain continued I should take a while off.

My athletic trainer at the high school said that it will bother me for the rest of the season. It is to the point to where in the morning I can hardly walk. It gets a little better throughout the day, but the game this week is not looking good. Thanks for your advice.
