Re: Post Your Computer Gaming Rig
Woah that is interesting! I wonder why the I7 920 seems to have more potential than the i7 950 from what I have been reading so far? Seems like this is the most clockable and most stable chip.Comment

I am not sure either, but no reason to spend more and have less. the 920 is so easy to OC and so stable, I can't see why anyone would go for the higher 900 series right now.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Really? I actually haven't even been on New Egg since I bought my rig last January. I haven't needed anything and didn't want to be tempted to buy anything.
That is probably just a funnction of demand. People recognize the 920 is a solid chip so its keeping the price up and the higher chips haven't got as good of reviews for OC'ing so they have come down.
Not even sure what the difference between the chips is except for stock speed which is easily changed.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Re: Post Your Computer Gaming Rig
On vacation so I had plenty of time today to research these answers. Basically they are all the same chip but have a different bin setting. What that means is they all come from the same factory wafer but the closer to the center of that large chip wafer the better the quality. The higher the quality the easier it is to clock with a higher setting using roughly the same amount of volts.Really? I actually haven't even been on New Egg since I bought my rig last January. 920 - 930 is the the outter part of the wafer.
940 - 950 is further inward.
960-970 is closer to the center.
980 up is the center.
Basically the 950 is or was a more expensive 920 version with the processing speeds tweaked up. Since the 950 is easier to get ahold of than the 920 and the price is roughly the same, it seems the 950 is the way to go since it also can be overclocked just as easy.
I will wait to January when all of the prices should drop with Intels new releases.Comment

Re: POST YOUR COMPUTER GAMING RIG
Been reading up on this. Looking at doing two SSDs in raid 0 and a 1 TB WD Cavalier Black for regular storage. Question of the day is this possible?10k rpm drive? Why not raid 0 two ssds and then get a 2nd large drive for data storage? Why the 12GBs of ram?
Current build;
EVGA X58
i7 2.6hz
6GB Ram (1600)
GTX470 (main)
GTS8800 (physx)
850w modular Corsair ps
4 10k rpm drives in raid 0 (3 74gbs, 1 150gb) (OS/Games)
1 TB 7200 rpm drive (storage)
Coolermaster Stacker 830
The raid 0 setup came about out of boredom. Initially it was going to be the two 74gb 10k rpm drives in raid 0, with the 150gb 10k as temp storage and the 1tb as perm storage but was getting an odd delay on occasion with the 150gb. I had another 74gbs 10k sitting around collecting dust, so I hooked all 4 10k drives up in raid 0 to see how it would perform. Writing is fast, reading is about par with 1 10k rpm (no surprise there). This was actually my first raid setup of any kind for my home system. I wish I could spring for an actual controller card and have a real raid setup though.
Next steps for me is moving to SSDs in a raid 0 setup. Whenever money permits.
I am new to understanding raid 0 using SSDs. So the question of the day is how to set it up so that I can back it up on the 1 TB regular drive?
Do I put the operating system on the SSDs??? Should I put the games on them? How should I do this setup?
What size SSDs should I use for raid 0?Comment

Re: Post Your Computer Gaming Rig
More research done.
I just need one SSD to load windows 7 and the updates. No need to buy two and use Raid 0 which seems it would be complete waste of money.
Add a 1 TB Western Digital 6 gb/s drive for the games and applications.
Unless there is any interest which lately doesn't appear that way, I will let this thread disappear into obscurity.Comment
