What is the best car to get for around $20k?

My car was totaled on Christmas eve, so I am in the market for a new car. However, I don't want a huge note either. My budget is 18-22k. I'm not sure if I want to go the pre-owned route either. I'd like to hear opinions on long-term reliability, satisfaction with purchase etc. Thank you!

Umm..Yeah they're a tad more. The Toyota Highlander looked nice, but not at $35K though. LOL

I vote used. If you get a single car owner who took car of it you'll have no issues.

You could get a very nice vehilce with pretty low mileage for that amount. You could get a vehicle that was leased.

Also you didn't really describe what type of vehicle you are looking for...

I'm looking for a 4dr sedan. It doesn't have to have leather, but I would like a sunroof at least. If a car is "certified pre-owned", does that mean it's still under warranty?

I would recommend a Chevy Cruze, that's the car I am driving. It ranges from 18-21k, one of the safest cars on the market, and pretty sleek.

I want a raise. How can you afford that on a mod's salary?

                Sonata hands down......

Honestly in that price range there are tons of 4 door sedans. I would hit up Carmax and look for their cars that were a part of the lease fleet.

Those are the cars that car rental places like Enterprise, Hertz, etc use to have. Those cars have really low mileage and practically brand new but Enterprise and Hertz replace their fleet every year or two.

You can get really good deal. Hell some Enterprises even sale their rental cars they want to get rid of right on their own lot. Nothing be wrong with them, they are just too old for the rental market because rental market like to keep up with the newest styles.

I'd go certified pre-owned. It's "used" but still under warranty. The Jeep I bought had 9K miles on it of a 100K "bumper to bumper" warranty.

Might want to consider a 09 or 2010 Honda Accord??

You don't want a car that was a rental. People beat the **** out of rentals simply cause they don't own it. There's a reason they replace those cars all the time.

Go certified pre-owned, buying a car brand new is one of the worst investments you can ever make.

The car depreciates about 33% in the 1st year. Get a used car with about 12,000 miles on it, you'll get a $28K car for around $20K and it will still have the new car smell.

All you are doing the first year of car ownership is flushing money down the toilet.

Also, I have done alot of reaserch on the subject. You are looking at between 6 to 7 years as the break even point if you buy a new car. In other words, If you are going to own it for 7 years, you are ok buyng new. If you want a new car four years or so, you have wasted alot of money.

Thank you sir! I definitely plan on keeping the car for a while, but like you said getting a $28k car for around $20k with low miles does sound tempting, especially if the warranty is still in tact.
