There are too many factors to really guide you in the right direction. Personally, I say used unless you are wealthy.

If you have 18-20k cash to put on a car then buy something used for half of that and bank the balance. We bought our minivan in 2005 for $3000 and haven't regretted it for a moment.

Hyundai would be your best bet, great car with a great warrenty. They have come a long way over the past 15 years. Plus you will get more options then any other make out there in that price range. Take a look at a Sonata.

I just want to say, and I am not trying to shift you away from doing what you really want, but consider buying something that will challenge you. For starters, it's unique and unlike what the masses do. This warranty rhetoric in recent years has scared people into buying something that may very well not even be best for them.

We are so scared the car will break down that we get something new with what is essentially a safety net because, why? We can't fend for ourselves if something happens to our vehicle? Why not put half down on a vehicle and enjoy the challenge of maintaining it? I'm sure there are "reasons" to buy new and get the warranty, but I feel like dealerships are capitalizing on how society is. God forbid we have to roll up our sleeves and work something out.

I'm not saying anyone here is a wuss and can't fend for themselves. I'm simply suggesting we consider an alternative to what everyone else does.

The Chevy Certified pre-owned gives you a 1 year or 12,500 mile bumper to bumper and the rest of the 100k transmission.

Definetely go used. They clean these things down to the little details if it's a good dealer so you can't even tell. If anything is messed up they'll fix it for free.

Volkswagens are decent cars. But be warned, when no more warranty, massive damage to the wallet ensues with repair costs.

European cars love to still have insanely priced OEM parts. I swear some of them parts are more expensive than parts for a Corvette. Just insane.

Pretty sad I can part for part repair a Lexus or even a Corvette cheaper than a starter class Jetta.

Yes Hyundai is very good. I have a Tiburon and it is a 2003 with 90 plus miles on it. In 4 years of owning it I've had one problem with it, and it was a $100 fix.

My cousin has a 2008 Sonata and loves it and it hasn't given him any issues also.

Just to add, Kia and Hyundai are the exact same company. Same drive train, warranties, etc.

So true, I am so glad that I am my own mechanic. If I had to have somebody else do the work on my cars the markup alone on parts would put me in the poor house. I spent over $300 for a set of rear brake pads and that was wholesale.
