        Re: Off Topic 2011

I just went to GameStop to shop for a cheap game and there was a new guy in there. He stood beside me while I tried to browse the games and kept talking and talking and talking and talking and talking and talking and talking and talking and talking and talking talking and talking and talking and talking and talking talking and talking and talking and talking and talking talking and talking and talking and talking and talking talking and talking and talking and talking and talking... you get the point.

He even went to fetch a sheet he printed with all the new releases coming out, after I insisted that it wasn't necessary and that I probably knew about the majority of them. He just wouldn't leave me the **** alone.. when he finally went away.. I had a 10 min conversation with the manager and this guy that was in his early 50s and was a real gamer.. knew about all the games and everything. The conversation with them wasn't bad. the manager is a cool guy and the older guy was cool, but I can't stand when someone won't leave me alone when I'm trying to shop.. when I tried every possible thing I could do to be nice and get the point across that I was just browsing.

I don't mind being asked "How are you doing" or "Are you finding everything you need ?", because I work in retail.. that's what you're told to do.

I just don't need anyone constantly talking to me about **** I don't care about. It's the first time It's ever happened to me in there..

Aweee the joys of retail......The world of if you talk too much you get in trouble, don't talk enough you get in trouble. Pretty much, you will always be in trouble no matter what.

He could have been nervous though, since I know some people when they get nervous they become over chatty.

I will say though, the majority of the time I "bug" customers is when my managers force me to go "engage" a customer even if I or someone else has already talked to them. At Best Buy, our sales model is called TRUST. Thank, Respect, Understand, Solve, and Thank again. It's pretty dumb, mainly because we're taught to stay away from product oriented conversation and focus on getting to know the customer and finding a solution that fits their needs. To some people, that works great, but others just want to shop. I'd love to see what DickDalewood would have to say because I know he's a supervisor at Best Buy. But, people need to remember sometimes that it's not me who's bugging you, I'm just doing my job because I'd get in trouble if I didn't. I totally understand why people get upset though, because if I need help I'll find it when I shop.

That is funny......Walmart model was always keep it on product oriented conversation and get them to buy more of it.

                        Trust me..

I'm a Dept. Supervisor and I understand good customer service. This guy was just a little overboard. He was sincere and wanted to help, but just needed to tone it down a bit. If anyone has ever worked for Home Depot, their motto is Putting customers "FIRST".. I guess my situation is just one of those "you had to be there" kind of things..

The Best Buy model is horrible. A friend worked there , wasn't selling much. I told him a much more effective method... he was the top seller and everyone thinks he's using TRUST when he isn't.

My gripe with Best Buy is they ask you how you're doing when you first walk in...I want to look and then ask questions if I have them. Sometimes I have to walk all over to find someone not busy or literally sprinting to somewhere else.

I like stores that offer a balance between leaving me alone, offering help, and making me NOT feel like I'm a pain because I want to purchase something.

Neither of those models really... I don't know. It's like sales managers have never worked in sales. And the people that write sales books have never worked in sales.

I like "Greet, Qualify, Recommend , Close." Easy and focused. The other parts of that are be cheerful and enthusiastic, nobody buys from a bored rep. And if you really have to be reminded to thank your customers, you should've never been hired after an interview.

Greet- "That's an awesome printer you're looking at, I love wireless printers, it's so much easier to set up, and no cords to trip on."
Qualify- "Do you want (NOT need, people NEED to pay their power bill, they WANT a ps3) a new printer?"
Recommend- You recommend based on qualifications
                            Close- Sell the thing

Much more effective than starting with a cliche'd "can I help you find anything?" I say no to that out of reflex. Plus instead of asking a question, you've engaged a conversation... social norms would be they that say something back. Even if it's "I'm just curious" the response is "sounds to me like you're thinking about one- is there something wrong with the printer you have now"... and qualifying begins

Well I can see why Best Buy is kind of pushy, because some of their workers get commission, so that is understandable.

Walmart workers pushiness is strictly driven by the assistant, co and store managers. You learn that on day one of orientation. Engage everybody that is within 5ft of you, REPEATEDLY until they buy something and always keep the conversation on product.

Kmart workers never been pushy to me, neither are target or sears.

Home Depot.........hell you got to find one of their workers 1st. At least that how it is at the one in my town. They are always huddled somewhere in the far corner of the store chit chatting.

Menards.....they got a pretty good balance, they aren't pushy, but yet they let you know they are there in the area.

Now don't get me started on mall kisosk people. T-mobile workers are like voltures, just like the jewelry dealers.
