Well a lot of DALLAS devotees (myself included) considered the series over after the Pam character died.

The last 2-3 seasons of that show was like Chinese water torture.

It was one of the top Prime Time TV shows of the '80s. In fact one season it went head to head with Miami Vice and very nearly won the timeslot.

I don't recall Dallas, but I do remember Miami Vice though, I watched that a TON, even dressed like them.

And that was when winning a time slot meant something.

Because there was about 4 channels. Also, we had to walk through 2 feet of snow to change the channel.

I don't recall Dallas, but I do remember Miami Vice though, I watched that a TON, even dressed like them.

LOL I used to have a Sonny Crockett jacket as a kid. Used to wear it to every single formal occasion.

I just couldn't imagine tuning in for the series finale of one of my favorite shows and it ending with, what was the guy a demon(?), trying to and eventually succeeding in talking one of the main characters into killing himself.

Someone somewhere wrote that and thought it was a good idea.

And while I understand they played it off later as he shot a mirror or something, the original plan was obviously that he'd killed himself.

EDIT: I just watched the actual scene. That is MESSED UP. Wow. Demon guy wasn't subtle, wasn't hinting that he should kill himself, he was literally telling him he should "kill youself". That scene would never fly on network television today.

The producers, actors etc etc didn't even know the show was going to be canceled as one CBS office was saying they were greenlit for another year while the other office was hemming and hawing.

The conventional wisdom is that it'd still be the "shooting at mirror" explanation and that J.R. would rise from the ashes (his situation was pretty dire at that point in time) instead the show was canceled and they did the 3 TV movies about 5 years later.

Now there's going to be a new DALLAS pilot which may be turned into a series on TNT. Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy are all signed on to be a part of it but the focus will be on the younger Ewings who are in their early 30s now.

Interesting. I can't imagine they'd have played it off with the mirror, though. When Patrick Duffy comes in his reaction makes it pretty obvious that something's gone more wrong than a mirror being shot.

The only thing I can think of that'd justify Duffy's reaction but keep JR alive is that Duffy comes running in, JR's shot the mirror and is now holding the gun to his own head again, which is possible, I guess.
