That NYC tax is killer. Also, rent here is RIDICULOUS.
No, my fiance wants to live in the city, so I think any ship to live in a suburb is gone. I'm not too worried, as I don't think NYC is high on the list for us. I think the NW is higher, then Boston is above NYC as well, I believe. But then again, it's all about where she'll get a job. I'm sure we'll revisit this when she gets a job.

That's great! I hope we get the same. SW VA's weather is pretty erratic in general, but we might have the ceremony in central VA. No idea yet.

Sorry to hear that man. That's a very long life for a dog though.

Question. Was your first dog still around when you got Rusty?
No, he had passed - they never knew each other. I think there was a year between when he died and we got Rusty. It was so long ago I don't remember clearly though - I was just starting middle school at the time.

That dog grew into adulthood right alongside me and my brother...that's why it's such a tough loss.

I'm not sure how other cities are, I thought you had NYC in as a finalist, but here its outrageous. Too many people who are flamboyant. It's all about what you have and how you can flaunt it. It's the way people carry themselves around here. It didn't really affect me until I started working here and coming every day. Even in NJ, where I live, same thing, actually. Bergen County is the 'richest' county in the US, if I am not mistaken.

On top of all that, you have to deal with, insane traffic on a random but almost daily basis, for, seemingly, no reason, a port authority that doesn't care about the economy and raises tolls, which will eventually find its' way down to the end user, the commuter. (It now costs 12$ to cross into NYC -__-, path trains have gone up over 50%, and I'm sure NJ Transit, what I take, will follow suit soon enough, although they have posted record profits.)

I could be a successful accountant but am not sure exactly how happy I would be, living here. It's not all about money. I would definitely take a pay cut to live somewhere else, stress free, for the most part.

While I would love to mark places as finalists, I can't really do that. My fiance and I really like the NW... she likes the idea of it and I really liked my visit. We plan on living in an apartment in the city where we go, walking and using public transit to get where we're going (with possible use of a ZipCar? no idea). I don't doubt that it can be expensive where I go, but I'm not too sad about it. We'll have enough money to live our lives. Regarding the "flaunting", I don't care too much about that. That's probably the southerner in me.

I know I've lived here in this town (and a smaller city right next door) for roughly 23 years. I'm anxious/excited/worried/scared/exhilarated about this whole thing, but there's so much up in the air that I don't know what the hell's going to happen. Maybe the whole thing is just not going to happen, and I stay here. Who the **** knows.

What I'm trying to say is... as long as I live in a decent part of town, eat good food, have good times, be able to support our lives... **** it, man, that's a good life. Everything else is just window dressing.

                Re: Off Topic 2011

Starting to be that way in all major cities. That is the reason why I left Chicago over a decade ago. Taxes in major cities is insane.

I mean you had the state tax, the county tax and then the city tax. That city tax drove me nuts. I have friends in Chicago that pay $1,000 a month for a STUDIO apartment. And that isn't even in the best neighborhood of a Chicago either.

Been to NYC dozens of times and to me NYC is just a smaller version of Chicago with even higher taxes then Chicago. So therefore I said forget that I'm moving to Vermont, land of very low taxes and lots of land.
