    Loss of Smell and Taste

    This really sucks.

So I got a nice little cold last week with a lot of congestion and stuffy nose. To battle the plugged up nose, I used Zicam, which is a gel that you shoot up your nose and breaks everything up (it actually works really well for this). On top of that, I would flush my nose out with a neti-pot and a simple saline rinse.

Everything was all clogged and I had trouble smelling and tasting, which made sense since that is typically what happens when you can't breathe out of your nose.

Fast forward to this week, everything is cleared up for the most part with the last little bit of everything draining and running out and I still can't taste or smell. It's not just muffled, it's completely gone. Even super strong odors (gasoline, etc.) can't be detected.

So I go online and read all this crap about people losing their sense of smell and/or taste from using Zicam and how there is a class action lawsuit about it. The FDA actually suggest not using some of their products because of the complaints (wish I would have known this earlier). Some of the loss is temporary and some is permanant. I'm going to schedule an appointment with the Dr. if I don't see any improvement in the next few days and then decide how to pursue things going forward.

This is completely bumming me out. I can't imagine going through life without two of my senses.

So just as a warning to anyone with a cold...stay away from Zicam. Even if you have used it without problem in the past, be aware. I've used it multiple times over the last two years (colds come often with two kids in daycare) and never had any problems and then all of a sudden i used it just three or four times over the course of a few days and boom...all gone.

Anyway, just wanted to vent and warn others.

I would rather be blind or deaf. This is terrible. I hope it's just temporary.

way to make the guy feel better about this. And really, blind or deaf? I don't think so.

Wow, that sucks. Hopefully it gets better soon. I actually have congenital severe hyposmia (almost no sense of smell). I can only smell very noxious and concentrated odors.

I don't know how you can say that. I also have hearing and visual impairments but having virtually no sense of smell is a hell of a lot easier to deal with that vision/hearing problems.

What? That's crazy. Being blind or deaf is one of my greatest fears, personally there's no way I would compare those to a loss of smell/taste, not to downplay either of those senses.

Anyway, this sounds awful, hopefully it's temporary. Can't imagine not being able to taste anything. This is one of the reasons I don't take any medication of any kind, too many side effects that are way worse than the problem they're trying to fix.

OK, I've thought about it more, and I'll give you blind. But I can say with absolute certainty that I'd rather be deaf from today on than not be able to taste food for the rest of my life. Sign language and lip reading would be easy to pick up. And since I've already heard things, I could play music in my head and be OK there.

And again, I wish the OP the best and hope it's just temporary.

EDIT: And furthermore, how in the hell is this drug allowed to continue to be on the market if there is even any reason whatsoever to believe that this drug is causing these problems? When things like this come out, products should immediately be pulled from the shelves.

Tough call for me as I love music too much to never be able to hear it again.

I think I'd much rather lose taste and smell before sight and hearing. I think you could live a normal life without taste and smell (it wouldn't be as enjoyable) than having to learn how to re-learn everything without site or hearing.

Losing taste and smell, IMO, just lowers your enjoyability of life. Losing Site and Hearing totally changes the way you live your life.

Ranking the importance of the 4 of 5 senses:
              Sight
              Hearing
              Smell
              Taste

Not sure where touch fits in there, with the other four being strong, touch may not be "as important" as it it would be if you were missing sight.

Yeah, this is a bit bothersome. On the Zicam site, they are refunding people their money back who want to return their product, but deny any of the claims made by the FDA that it is in any way, shape or form, responsible for these problems.

My wife sent me a link (can't find it at the moment) that said back in 06, they paid out over $12M in a lawsuit for the same exact thing.

I guess it's a little stupid of me to trust OTC products and not do my research (does anyone?). I get that there are side effects to everything, but usually a runny nose, swelling, anal leakage etc...not a loss of one or two of your five senses.

Wow, that's nuts. Hopefully you either get your senses back or get a nice chunk of change to deal with the absence of those sense. But also, thanks for the heads up for the rest of us.

I don't know about you guys, but I try to be very aware of stuff like this. I've never been a fan of taking medicine. It seems people are too quick to just pop a few pills. Me, I only take even the safest stuff if absolutely necessary. The body heals itself. I'd rather go a more natural method then get a prescription.

Damn that's terrible. I've heard of this so when I use Zicam, I don't use the swab version.

                            Zicam = Ziscam

I'm hoping all turns out well, but hey, there is a positive aspect to this if you don't have a sense of taste. You can eat all the healthy foods you want even though they taste like complete ****.

This seems like an arbitrary number.

To the answer OP, it's only been a week so I'm sure that eventually it will come back. It's usually never a good thing to snort things in your nose if it's not an inhaler...But I agree, it does stink.
