I mostly use "rowt", but I use "root" when it comes to the example fistofrage gave ("root" 66).

I remember playing a game of pick-up football in college and saying that I ran a "root." Someone said to me, "Say 'rowt.' It sounds better." So, from then on, I have said "rowt" instead of "root"... lol... kind of a dumb reason, I know.

Seems like 'rowt' sounds more intelligent...or like a higher language? Does anyone think the same?
Oh well, since I don't use a high language (or maybe I'm not intelligent?), I use 'root'.

Both are acceptable. I almost always say "rout".

However, for something like Rt. 66, I may say "root".

I tend to go with "raut" (what people on here are spelling "rowt"), though admittedly sometimes I go with "root" when referring to roads.

I thought different regions would pronounce things differently, but looking at this map, Michigan pronounces each word differently at relatively high %'s, there really isn't a dominant dialect in the Midwest from briefly looking at the maps.

I use both...For football routes and computer routers I use "rowt", but for stuff like "Which route are you going to take?" I will say "root" sometimes (that can be interchangeable)

I would never say "Go run a 'flag root' or a 'Fly root'. I will always say ROWT for those. But I will say "Root 66" or what is the best "root" to get there? It really just depends on what context I am using the word. ROWT sounds more sophisticated, but since I'm from a rural area, pronouncing it "root" in every context would certainly not seem out of place.... except in football terms.
