Re: OS Cars Thread
So I ordered a Porsche Macan S from the factory at the end of November and finalized my build in mid December, it's just getting off the boat today. So while it's frustrating to wait 8 months at least i'll have it in my possession by next week. Pics to come once I get it. Needs to pass through Customs and go through all the dealer prep.
The wife got a new Jaguar E-Pace in January and I ordered a Ford Bronco at the same time. She's been driving hers for 6 months and I still don't have a build date for mine. I originally reserved the order in April 2021 but wanted to actually test drive one before converting it to an order and didn't do that until my wife got her new ride. Here we are like 15 months later and you still can't even test drive one. At this point, I'd be really happy to have it by the end of the year.My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

Nice ride and that's a pretty impressive turnaround given the supply constraints and all.

I will say this for Porsche, they were pretty good about communicating with me. I got emails when the build began, then emails as it went through the process. At the end when it was loaded on the boat they sent me an email with a link to track the boat as it was in transit.Comment

Re: OS Cars Thread
For the Bronco because I know so many people want them, is it supply chain issues or are they just not able to keep up with demand? 15 months man, that is a long time to wait, especially with no end in sight. Any chance Ford is pulling a Nintendo, and keeping supply low to drive demand? My neighbor just got one a while back, they are pretty damn cool.

So yeah, it's been a real pain but luckily this is basically just a weekend vehicle for me so I'm not in a bind like the people waiting for an "everyday driver". Ford paused Bronco sales in March so they can catch up on orders but the order banks are supposed to open back up in a couple of weeks. I am tempted just to put a hold on my 22MY and see what new options 23MY has since if I did get one it would be so close to MY23 anyway.
Ford has a tracker but the problem is you're left in the dark until you get a VIN #. Once you get a VIN you can track it from the plant to the dealership but without the VIN it's basically radio silence. Frustrating but I'm not paying what they're going for right now on the used market so the wait continues. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

Re: OS Cars Thread
I’m thinking of starting an Overland tour here in my island but haven’t really explored it with a 4x4 yet.
Before setting up the tour I’m gonna start a 4x4 build and I been looking like crazy what to go with. There’s a ton of options for mid size pick ups like the Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux (similar to a Tacoma).
Always wanted an FJ Cruiser or maybe an older Land Cruiser since there’s a bunch of those here.
I’m leaning towards a truck since I can use it for picking up stuff.
Pretty excited, never built up a 4x4. Probably just a simple lift with bigger tires and a wench to start

Re: OS Cars Thread
I'm torn between wanting a new ride but not wanting to get rid of what we have now.
Currently:
2018 G550 (owe like 25K on it and plenty of equity)
2018 GLS 63 (picked this up last year so still owe in the 50s)
I'm really wanting a RS6. I've had my eyes on it since the news came out that it was making a return.
I'll probably wait until the G550 is paid off next summer and then start looking to add the RS6 as a weekend-er.Comment

Re: OS Cars Thread
I know this isn't Road & Track forums, but if you feel like it, can you comment a bit by what you mean when you say the Macan makes the BMW feel (worse) when you drive it? My personal experience with driving many, many SUV's over the years (including all of the upscale luxury brands just south of the Urus) is that I honestly can't tell one from the other. I suppose if I were on a track or at Tail of the Dragon maybe I could, but day-to-day driving, I've always been of the opinion that 1 SUV = every other SUV. (Obviously goes without saying that this is just my opinion, not trying to be controversial at all).Comment

Re: OS Cars Thread
The lease on my 2020 BMW 4 series ends next month, and I have decided to buy it out (since it would be financially irresponsible to buy a 911 at this point). Wanted to detail out a few things that I've been going through for general awareness that might help someone down the road.
Full backstory:
So, I reached out to my local dealership last week to let them know that I wanted to purchase my car at the end of the lease. I was able to communicate entirely through phone/email (which was nice as it gave me time to think about all options), the sales rep sent me a dealer sheet listing the residual value, tax, tag, title, other fees. The out the door price.
If anyone is familiar with these little dealer sales sheets, there is a list of payment options off to the side, a small chart showing your payments based on 48, 60, 72 months and then a few different down payment options. Not listed on this sheet was the interest rate, it just says "estimate based on a credit score of 750". They had not run my credit at this point, and I asked the rep what the interest rate was. He said he'd get back to me on it, but he never did. I was able to work the math and figure out that those payments would have to be based on a rate of ~7%. It's possible that the actual rate would have been less if we had gone forward with running the credit and the whole approval, but I decided to shop around before going forward with any of that. I talked to a few different credit unions, none higher than 4%, and one even down to almost 3%. So, I'm squared away from the financing side of things.
However, I did take issue with the "other fees" listed on the dealer sheet. They were charging me $500 for a "safety & emission inspection". I had several issues with this:
1.) My car has 8k miles on it, I took the lease just before the pandemic, I've been WFH full time since then, and we use my wife's car for all errands. So I'm not worried about anything being wrong with on a car with 8k miles on it.
2.) Georgia requires emissions testing on cars, but the first 3 years are exempt (which I'm still in that time period). I will have to get it done before my birthday in January of 2023, but it also has to be done within 30 days of a birthday. So, I would need to pay for a separate emissions testing in just 2 months.
3.) My insurance will fully reimburse for a safety inspection at any of their approved repair shops (not BMW of course). BMW won't accept that of course.
4.) I'm essentially paying them $500 to protect themselves from liability for selling a car with a problem. A very 1 sided transaction.
5.) What happens if they do find something wrong? Do they not sell me the car, do they force me to pay for the repair before they will sell it? I can't imagine they would take on that cost.
So, even if I didn't only have 8k miles, I don't see the value here.
So, I called BMW's corporate number, and talked to their financial services as I wanted to first confirm that this was a required fee. The rep that I spoke with confirmed that it was a requirement from dealerships for the potential liability reasons that I mentioned above. However, I can bypass the dealership and work directly through their BMW Financial Services if I am comfortable with not doing things like buying an extended warranty, etc.
So, by making sure that I explored all options and contacting every entity that I could think of, I'm going to end up saving close to $100/month in interest vs. what the dealer estimate showed, and another $500 on total out the door price for not being forced into an unnecessary service.Comment
