Re: Choice: Be a Cop or Teacher..

I don't think I could even fathom doing either one of those jobs for any amount of money. They both sound a lot more stressful than any kind of work I have ever done and I stress out pretty easily.

I eat breakfast at the local diner at the top of my street with several members of the local PD a few days a week and there is no way they make anywhere near the kind of money being thrown out there in this thread. It's not like they're broke, but there is no way those guys (and gals) can make more than an above average salary.

And I have two friends who teach at a high school that both absolutely despise their jobs and don't make very good money either.

      Allow me to be blunt...

You'll get eaten ALIVE by your fellow officers if you go into Law Enforcement with an attitude that says you're only there for the check.

You'll be miserable as a cop dude...

I think your best option is to consider moving out of NYC and fulfilling your dream elsewhere. If you can't be a teacher there, broaden your horizons.

Being in Law Enforcement is serious business, and you just don't have the right mindset for it, and that puts you and others at a high risk.

Being a cop should no longer be an option for you...

Let me just say that reputation is everything within the PD. Those who come to work to collect a paycheck are looked down upon and usually end up hating their job.

Yeah, if you're there for a check, you're stopping someone who wants the job. And you might die.

Right now I have the best teaching job in my opinion. I have one week off a month and get paid for it. I am off at 3:00pm and only have the students for 4 hours. I have a lot of prep time, because I can't take students' work home. And I make more money than the teachers' that work in regular High Schools. And I make double in the summer if I choose to work it.

You're right to an extent. If they're in Ohio they're not making any money, but in NYC The starting salary for a cop is $44,000 and top pay is $91,000 after 5 years(Check their site). Teachers start at $45,000 and once they get their masters it goes up to $55,000. Top pay for a teacher in NYC is $78,000 to $90,000 depending on the subject.

Guys, do you honestly feel most people become cops because they love it? If that was the case so many of them wouldn't leave to become fireman. So far from my own personal experience, most cops I've spoken to don't love their jobs, and I've spoken to many cops. Out of 20 + cops i've spoken to 8 or 9 told me they love their jobs. When it comes to feeding your family you have to do what you have to do.

I would think that must people that want to be cops are people that like to be in power and have authority over others. At least that seems to be the mind step of cops I know.

You're right but that doesn't make them right. Hope that makes sense! Any officer out there without the proper mindset should go find another job.

Lol the more I read it it does sound likens slam. But it is not. I just mean to be a cop you seem to have to have that a leader gene in you. Also it is not easy being a cop, so you have to want that authority gene too so to speak.

I am a Police Officer...It has it advantages and disadvantages. But if your heart ain't in it, I would suggest being a teacher.

Ummm we deal with everybody. It's routine for a parent to call 911 and complain about their out of control child who is 10-15 years old. So we get there and have this kid yelling at their mom while she yells at them and the parent yells at us because we need to take the child away because she can't handle it. Then we get yelled at even more when we tell the parent that the child is their responsibility and that we can't just take it away.

That call happens almost every single day.

We don't deal with kids under 10 much, unless they are victims.
