I would take all that in to account ND and see what police force offers the best. Also if you are serious about your girlfriend then you need to take into account where is the best teaching job too. Unless she is going to be a stay at home mom down the road.

In all brutal honesty if you DONT like the idea of being a cop then don't even think about it. You are either going to get yourself or your partner killed. If you havea wife and children who don't want you to be a cop and this is not your "calling" then DO NOT go thru the motions. All it will lead to is heart ache for you and your family.

This is the exact reason I could never work in the police force.

3rd shifters: No incentive pay
Detectives: Nothing except callback and they took away take home cars

Raises? I'm way behind inflation
Take home car? Not a chance

I'm going to put in 5 years and move. After three and a half I will begin looking elsewhere.

NYC, conneticut, Seattle.. All pay great for cops. Around $91,000 top pay with no overtime. My buddy made $110,000 with some over time last year in NYC..

Most teachers that are starting out have to work the summer. Some schools you get paid 12 months, but it is basically getting paid for 10 month being stretch out for 12 like my job, so your monthy check is not as big. Then there are schools that pay you for the just the 10 months you work. Those checks are larger a month, but you get no summer check. Therefore you have to do something in the summer. Especially if you are low on the salary schedule. I am in the middle right now. Because I work the summer I get two checks during those two months. So I get my regular and my summer checks. The summer check is bigger than my regular check, because I get my pay diem which is at $325 aday. On the other months I get payed a set salary for the month which is about $5,000 a month. That is not after taxas though.

Scott, the Board of Ed in NYC pays a teacher $44,000 starting for a 6.5 hour day, and the 2 month vacation is paid as well as part of your yearly salary. If a teacher decides they want to teach the summers, they get paid double time. Private schools are different. They usually get jerked..

Yeah that getting paid for the summer means that you get your checks spread out. Instead of the 10 month schedule most districts do. They do 12 months. It is cool, but you get less a month that way.

I'd say the majority would. I've spoken to most in my area and some of my best friends are cops, and their fathers. They all say they love the job and would do it no matter what.

Which one would you guys choose? I Would like to hear what some of you guys think. Adolecent teacher or NYPD cop. I have 1 year and a half left to get my BA. I'm in the process of becoming a cop as well, I'm on the waiting list, and I need to make a decision. My heart wants to be a teacher, since I love working with teens, but there's a freeze in NYC for teaching thanks to bloomberg(Hate him). I don't like the idea of being a cop one bit, but I now have a son, and that changes things. My wife doesn't want me to be a cop, but I need something to pay the bills and make a decent salary. As a cop i'll be like a bird on a corner all day or night, crappy schedule, work weekends and it's dangerous. Teacher: Doing what I love, great schedule, off the entire summer and more time with my family. I need to decide soon. I'm scheduled to start the cop academy next month.

Salaries:
Cop: $44,000 starting max out at $76,000 in 5 years..
Adolecent teacher in Political science/Social studies: $45,000 Max out at $90,000 after 15 years or $100,000 after 20 years with a masters degree.

I'm not doing it for the money, but just wanted to drow that out there.

You got the same likelihood of getting killed on the streets of NY than you do if serving abroad. Plus the govt offers more benefits, and in addition on-base housing.
