Re: The Paleo Diet..I'm a convert.

For you guys looking for another protein source, check out: Amaranth and Quinoa. Amaranth has the most protein for a grain and Quinoa is 3rd, iirc. They are both a "side" but can really be made into a main as a salad.

Amaranth contains more protein than any other gluten-free grain and more protein than wheat. One cup of raw amaranth contains 28.1 grams of protein. Oats are a close second with 26.3 grams of protein.

Amaranth is an excellent source of lysine, an important amino acid (protein). Grains are notorious for low lysine content, which decreases the quality of their proteins. The high lysine content in amaranth sets it apart from other grains. Food scientists consider the protein content of amaranth of high "biological value", similar in fact, to the proteins found in milk. This means that amaranth contains an excellent combination of essential amino acids and is well absorbed in the intestinal tract.
    http://glutenfreecooking.about.com/o...a/amaranth.htm

Quinoa is higher in protein than most "cereal" grains. This means that quinoa contains all 9 essential amino acids that we need for health. The proteins in quinoa, unlike some plant proteins, are considered to be highly digestible, similar to the digestibility of the proteins in milk.

Quinoa is a good plant source of "essential fatty acids"- omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. It's also a good source of Vitamin E, an important antioxidant.

Quinoa is particularly high in manganese and is also a good source of magnesium, iron and copper. Manganese and copper are necessary for the function of a very powerful antioxidant called superoxide dismutase.

Re: The Paleo Diet..I'm a convert.

It's only been three days but the difference this diet has made is already very noticeable. I'm not talking about seeing more of my abs but it's my energy level and what's really stood out the most is that I'm not nearly as irritable. I usually snap and have a very short fuse but I've been so much calmer the last couple of days - and work was a ****show today and I still stayed calm.

My head feels much clearer, I'm able to concentrate more easily especially at night even after a long day. No doubt it's leading to a better, healthier, more productive life. I think those things will be far greater motivational points for me to stick to this diet instead of what my body winds up looking like.

Good stuff so far. Can't wait to see the impact it has on my body fat in 1-2 months as well.

Also something I forgot to mention about Quinoa, is that you can get it in several forms from flour to cereal to pasta. It really is a superfood.

I've tried going low-carbs, fresh veggies, lean meat diet's before but it never sticks.
The things that get in the way are:
          1. Cost.
          2. Prep time.
          3. I loves me some bread and pasta!

Ehh, can I ask you what a typical 2 or 3 days of your diet looks like?
What kinds of meals do you make?

Re: The Paleo Diet..I'm a convert.

I'm still doing IF as I mentioned so to break the fast around noon-1pm it's been...

**I eat this exact same thing every day, pack it in my lunch bag/cooler**
              Apple
              Peach
              Pack of almonds
              3 hard boiled eggs
Mini-salad (spinach/kale, carrots, cucumbers and broccoli)
              Two pieces of grilled chicken

My middle meal, sometimes while at work or sometimes right when I get home is more fruits/packed veggies or I make an omelet with turkey ideally.

Dinner is a huge meal, it's been wild salmon, chicken or beef every night with a ton of veggies (butternut squash, celery, spinach, broccoli, etc). I have some frozen red grapes usually as well or some cherries. I'm big on stir fry/sauteing...just throw the chicken/beef and all the veggies in a frying pan and have at it.

              ============

There was only one day where I mismanaged what I ate, it was a hectic day at work and I had to run out right after I got home from work so I ate a ton of fruit around 6pm and that made things a little too loose if you know what I mean.

The amount of veggies I'm eating on this diet make it well worth it. For the first time I'm consistently eating A LOT of veggies every single day.

I've decided that I'm going to eat some turkey cold cuts and chicken/turkey sausage, it just makes things easier when you don't have a lot of time to make a meal.

              So basically it's...

              - Eggs
              - Almonds
              - Tons of fruit
              - Tons of veggies
              - Grilled chicken, beef or salmon for dinner

I drink coffee black every day as well but besides that just water/seltzer. I'll probably incorporate a small amount of carbs back into my diet just because I love a wrap with potato chips sometimes. Diary though, forget it. I'm done with that stuff for good.

                Thanks ehh!

Regarding the OP, the one thing that I don't buy is how our system is not designed to process dairy.
Then how did cavewoman feed their babies?

Food consumption is just like everything in life; use in moderation.
Too much of anything is bad for you.

I think drinking milk or eating cheese is great for the human body, but if you're drinking 8 gallons of milk and three blocks of cheese per day, it'll probably do more harm than good.
Just like drinking one glass of wine per day has immense health benefits. But drink a case, and you'll have problems.

It's also a no-brainer that if you can afford it, eat organic foods that have no additives or preservatives.
Eating pure milk, cheese, meet, grains, etc, can't be anything but good for you. It's from the earth. Just eat in moderation and don't consume all those chemicals.

Cave women fed their babies with human milk not cows milk. It really isn't meant for humans imo. It's meant to feed calfs to become huge cows.

Re: The Paleo Diet..I'm a convert.

Chances are that if you drink milk straight from a cow or goat you will get sick. Not only are you putting yourself at risk of bacteria infections but your stomach is most likely used to pasteurized milk.

I like ice cream but I'm lactose intolerant and the reward doesn't outweigh the risk.

I haven't fully embraced Paleo yet. I'm weening myself on the change because I know how I am. If I jump right in I'm more likely to stray away since the change will be more sudden. I've been "embracing" this change and so far so good. Increased energy levels, better workouts, better sleep, and just an overall positive vibe are some of the benefits I've noticed.

When we're "babies" we possess the necessary enzymes to break down milk and its constituents.

As we get older, we lose those enzymes and, therefore, cannot properly break down dairy which is a pretty telling sign that dairy isnt really something we should continue to consume after a certain age.

Re: The Paleo Diet..I'm a convert.

                          I'm still not sold yet.
For one, I understand the argument that cows milk contains a large amount of protein, causing your body to increase it's acidic count, and then drawing from bones to level the ph balance.
However, what about meat from cows? Isn't there a great deal of protein from that as well?
Why is a steak great, but a glass of milk isn't? Wouldn't they contain the same portion of protein?

Also, my dad grew up on a dairy farm and they would literally drink milk shortly after it was obtained straight from a cow - no pasteurization.
He and his siblings grew up on this stuff and not one person in their family had an issue with allergies or lactose intolerance.
His parents also grew up on this stuff from 'the old country'.

I drank nothing but milk growing up; same with my brothers, my cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. and nobody in our family has any problems with lactose and in fact, almost everyone in my large extended family is devoid of allergies.

I did some research yesterday on the pro's and con's of milk and there are just as many articles from credited experts saying that Milk is good as there was bad.

North America is sicker(sp?) than most other continents simply because of all the crap we pour into our food, land, water and air.
We pollute ourselves with preservatives, chemicals and additives.

I think a lot of diets/fads feel great at first simply because it's something different and it breaks from the monotony. It's also great to give the body a change from the norm - just like when you work out.

I do agree that too much starch or simple carbs is bad for you.
Recently, I went on a month long diet where I avoided all white-sugars and consumed no white-bread, white potatoes, white-pasta, etc.
But one thing that I did to substitute was drink even more milk. I lost weight, got stronger in the gym, all while feeling a lot better, less tired and moody.

It seems every year there's a new diet or fad that comes out, goes mainstream, makes millions, and then fades into oblivion.

I believe the simplest solution is still the best; work out, eat healthy, whole foods and eat in moderation.

For those trying this diet, good luck and I hope it works for you.
But for me, milk has been a staple of my family for generations and I've never seen any poor affects.

                            3. I loves me some bread and pasta!
                            1. Honestly, I think I spend less money on groceries than before. I'm probably not nearly as strict as some of the other guys in this thread, but I typically buy apples, clementines, peaches, grapes, carrots, etc etc every other week or so (or as I need them) and overall can't tell the difference money wise. I've stopped buying a lot of prepackaged/boxed foods. Of course I'm not buying "organic" which is a little out of my budget for now, but I think the cost thing is a bit of myth. At least in my experience as a single guy living alone.

                            2. I hate, hate, hate slicing/dicing foods, but man its worth it in the end. I don't even feel the need to go out to eat because I feel like what I can make at home and the ingredients I'm not using are better and better tasting than most restaurants I've been too.

                            3. I love spaghetti and Italian foods in general. I pretty much eat spaghetti or some kind of pasta once a week. A couple months ago I switched to whole grain pastas and the difference is quite negligible to me. Its not nearly as heavy as regular pasta, but that's about the only thing that comes to mind.

I rarely buy bread any more as I typically use whole grain wraps for lunch or a half of a whole grain bagel for breakfast to satisfy my bready cravings.

This diet is no joke, and not a fad. All the stuff you'd be giving up is basically cr@p your body doesn't need anyway. I've been on it since February of 2011 and have dropped from 212 lbs to 180, and my body fat is obscenely low. Read the book "Paleo for Athletes", its a great read, and you learn a lot about eating for performance.

Congrats on converting, it takes a lot of discipline, especially over the first 30 days or so.

I basically have 3 giant tupperwares I eat out of during the week for breakfast/lunch. One has a pile of meat I cook on the grill, one has a massive greens salad, and the other has a fruit salad. That, and buy a HUGE sack of mixed nuts. During the week our dinners are pretty basic, just some kind of meat/veggie combo. Very simple eaters at our house...food is fuel for the fun.

                                Peach
                                Pack of almonds
                                3 hard boiled eggs
Mini-salad (spinach/kale, carrots, cucumbers and broccoli)
                                Two pieces of grilled chicken

My middle meal, sometimes while at work or sometimes right when I get home is more fruits/packed veggies or I make an omelet with turkey ideally.

Dinner is a huge meal, it's been wild salmon, chicken or beef every night with a ton of veggies (butternut squash, celery, spinach, broccoli, etc). I have some frozen red grapes usually as well or some cherries. I'm big on stir fry/sauteing...just throw the chicken/beef and all the veggies in a frying pan and have at it.

                                ============

                                That is effing fantastic!
