I certainly didn't forget about the hurricanes when considering the move. They just seem like something you just have to live with when you're near the east coast.

Do you mean that I should literally be prepared with candles, flashlights, food, etc.? Or just mentally prepared... lol?
Yeah both, have all the supplies like you mentioned and be ready for extended power outtages. Depending on exactly where you're moving to you could be without power for a long time. It sounds like you'll be in more of a populated area so it may not be that big of a problem. Just an example, I have relatives that live on a farm and they once went about 2 weeks without power after a hurricane.

Asheville has one of the best attractions in NC. The Biltmore Estate. Its very tranquil and a very nice town. I enjoy visiting there.

What area of North Carolina are you in, HHHBigFan?

                You mean eastern Tennessee?

East Tennessee is nice. Maryville is a smaller town but very quaint. Small college, 2 high schools(24 state titles between the 2 in football), and a cool historic downtown area.

Knoxville is a decent sized city. Plenty to do but I'm not sure it would be what you're looking for in a retirement area.

Chattanooga is essentially Knoxville with about 25,000 fewer people.

Lots of Yankees in eastern NC. Old retirees who didn't want the expense or have the money to retire in FL so they came here and settled for these beaches.

Yup, and they better stay on that side, I don't want the Yankees to infest my part of the state.

Seems like the kind of attitude people warn me about as a northerner moving down south.

It's not really to bad. I live in a small town called Lenoir, NC. which is just about 45min drive from Asheville and we have Yankees living here also. I just think they talk really funny. lol

Mk. Knight - western NC is the prettiest part of America. The Mountains are beautiful especially in the fall plus we have Indians but we do not fight with them anymore. Times sure has changed around here.

With all the tall pine trees down here power goes out a lot during storms.
LOL, so true. The first winter after we moved down here, there was a "wintry mix", which was basically rainy conditions while hovering near freezing. I was off work that day anyway, but the schools were closed, which I understood because of the potential for freezing roads. But just about everything else had shut down. I was running errands, so I was driving in it like regular. It was basically driving in the rain. I went back to work the next day only to find that the office had closed the previous day because of the "dangerous" conditions. I was like, "the same dangerous conditions I was driving in all day???"
