some ideas of laptops for college students
I'm going to community college this year, and I need a laptop! What are some nice laptops to carry around campus? Or is it common to have laptops on campus at community college?Or is it common to have laptops on campus at community college?Tags: None -

You don't really need a laptop on campus. There are usually computers readily available in almost every building (From my experience). But you will need one for work outside of classes. Don't have any recommendations, though. Mine was a gift. I did no research or anythingEagles | Phillies | Sixers | Flyers

I know that this is the case for UVa, with the exception of the computer science department, that on-Grounds computers are being phased out. The reason at UVa being that something like 99% of the student body brings a computer to school or buys one upon entering, and among those who bring computers the use of laptops has been rising steadily since 2000.
As to what laptop to get should you get one, it really depends on what you want to do. I'm not sure I'd get a netbook or an Acer, but a base-line Dell model or a base-line MacBook ought to be sufficient to get you through school. If you are pursuing an engineering discipline, however, you'll want to spend more money on a more powerful computer so you can run the necessary software at reasonable speeds.Comment

Dude, as long as it works, any $350 laptop willl do. Just make sure you guard that thing with your life though. Theft is rampant in college.Comment

While this may commonly be the case, some schools are in fact removing on-campus computers.

Re: some ideas of laptops for college students
I honestly have never used my laptop here at NC State except in my dorm room. I don't feel the need to bring it to any of my classes. The only class I regularly use a computer during the class is in Meteorology Lab and that takes place in a computer lab utilizing Linux and GARP and they provide the computers.
My roommate brings his laptop everywhere, but I don't see the need. I could get by with a desktop if I wanted, but I do like the flexibility of the laptop when I want to take it home or somewhere else. I don't think it is a necessity, but you do need some sort of computer in your dorm room or you'll be in the library a ton given that most of your assignments will utilize the computer.Comment

Re: some ideas of laptops for college students
Yeah you "CAN" get locks for your laptop, however your average college kid doesn't have one. Everybody has that it will never happen to me attitude and refuse to buy one.
When I was in college the most stolen items were the following:
1. Laptops
2. Graphing Caculators
3. Cell phones
4. Cell phone chargers
5. Books
6. Ipods
But then again I graduated college over 10 years ago and back then Ipods wasn't all that popular in college yet, very few kids actually owned one when I was in school.Comment

Re: some ideas of laptops for college students
You don't need one but it's useful for having a laptop in school. Depending on the type of classes you take, it might be a lot easier typing your notes then hand writing them. I took mostly science classes in college so the laptop never came out in class unless I wanted to goof off.
I got a Macbook Pro almost for free while I was in college and that worked really well for me about 99% of the time. There were a few times where I had to use a Windows computer because certain programs weren't on the Mac.
I just bought my dad a Dell Inspiron 17" and spent a decent amount of money on it so it wasn't a cheapo laptop. Nonetheless that thing is a POS, the build quality is very poor IMO. I would recommend against the Inspiron. I've played with my friends HP laptop and it seemed much better.Comment

You could go after a couple hundred dollar netbook. Small, cheap, and relatively easy to pawn off on someone later should you choose to go after an upgrade.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

If you want something that'll last you all 4 years, spend around $300-400. I have not had any positive experience with the ultra cheap ($200-250) laptops.Comment

Re: some ideas of laptops for college students
I had a desktop at school and I regret it, should have got a laptop. Definitely would have helped take notes in some classes, especially with those teachers who just stand up there and talk for an hour without any powerpoints or anything. And not having a laptop made group projects, or just studying in groups tougher to do.
But yea, you definitely don't need one, they do make things more convenient though. Don't need anything fancy. Just something to browse the internet and microsoft office.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

If I had the cash I'd consider a Macbook Air or something more slim to make carrying it around easier. The laptop I have now is a desktop replacement and pretty heavy (2 1/2 year old Dell XPS). Just consider weight when you get it since you'll be carrying it everywhere.
With WiFi all around campus I'd definitely get a laptop though...Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: some ideas of laptops for college students
Love having a laptop. Absolutely a necessity here at Iowa State. I use it in class on a daily basis. May vary for you depending on major.
I have a Macbook Pro. It's definitely pricey but I would recommend going Apple.
The cheapest Apple laptop computer is $899, I think, after the student discount. Mine was a couple levels up from that.Comment
