Man I hope a loader quits or something. At least it's not a wal-mart cashier, I could never do that. Hopefully since I will be "new" I get a lot of time at the self checkouts where you have less responsibility. I guess I should have appreciated my time down in Tool's where I worked maybe 20% of the time and took 20 minute breaks.
Anyone ever worked at Lowe's?

Dude no new person get to over watch self check out. You have to have serious cashier experience to get promoted to that position. Self check out watcher is a lot of responsibility. It isn't as easy as you think it is.Man I hope a loader quits or something. At least it's not a wal-mart cashier, I could never do that. If you don't know anything about cashiering, people would cheat you left and right in the self check out lanes.Comment

Re: Anyone ever worked at Lowe's?
Generally speaking, the 'Head Cashiers' spend most of their time watching self checkout, but there are times where the cashier will be assigned, while someone is on break, lunch, or running an errand.......
Self checkout is actually more trouble than what it's worth, in my opinion..
Most people still need help with it or try to bring a large item through, which requires a cashier physically scanning it.Comment

Exactly......People who over watch self check out are head cashiers and they are on their way to be promoted to customer service managers. I will list the order of operations of a store from top to bottomGenerally speaking, the 'Head Cashiers' spend most of their time watching self checkout, but there are times where the cashier will be assigned, while someone is on break, lunch, or running an errand.......

Zone Managers - some stores have this, still hourly pay, no real power
Customer Service Manager - still hourly pay scale, no real power
Department Manager/Head Cashier - still hourly pay scale, no real power
Sales Associate/Customer Service Associate/Cashier -Entry level

Re: Anyone ever worked at Lowe's?
I wish we had a lot attendant. Nothing was worse then having to drag in carts when it was 3:00 in the afternoon and 105*. The blue carts would literally burn your hand if you didn't wear gloves. We didn't have the volume to justify a full time person to do this like Wal Mart does.
Hm I figured it would be easier since you just kind of stand there. I guess that makes sense though. I don't mind doing it. I'd rather just be walking around and helping people instead of being lazy and just standing in one spot. Hopefully someone quits or something and I get moved out before they have time to even train me.Dude no new person get to over watch self check out. Not trying to be Offensive here, but why do you care what other people think? You already said you have a supportive Wife, so you definitely aren't trying to impress any potential females. That should really be all the approval you need.thanks for the feedback man! You know this echoes exactly what my wife is preaching to me, just keeps saying "do you". I think Im going to go for it. Just based off what people here are saying, seems like a lowes or Home depot would be a decent summer job for a guy like me.
If some guy walks into Lowes and looks down upon you for working there, screw them for being so narrow minded. They probably wouldn't be someone you would want to associate with anyways.Minnesota Vikings

no offense taken bro. I guess to be completely honest I'm a bit of a self conscience dude. As I have gotten older ive been progressively getting better with it.
Funny thing is that I didn't get a job at Lowes, I actually started working for a pool management company and spent my summer working at a pool managing lifeguards all year and messing with PH levels and chlorine and stuff.
Halfway through the summer Im like building this case so I can quit, like Im cleaning up little kids crap, basically working 6 days a week, they are trying to call me in on the 7th, it was an hour away from my house, yada yada yada. I just had it, so I look in the proverbial mirror and say WTF dude? I always find something negative to complain about or to moan or to quit, I basically said like if I cant make it through the summer shoveling crap, how am I going to make it out in the real world and make serious money? So I talked to my wife and basically said, Im going to try and just smile and get through the summer and quit worrying about everything.
you know, I know its obvious to most people but for me it just wasnt, but I started smiling, and people went nuts. I mean I got a raise, they are asking me back for next year, the kids are asking me for advice and whatnot. At the end of the summer, all of these upscale people were giving me letters of recommendation and all their contact info. half the people were giving me these 30 dollar gift cards from Wawa, im just like wtf is going on. The people just wanted a pleasant experience, they werent judging me, or holding these feelings towards me that I projected onto them.
Now as I graduate here next week, I look back and realize as long as I'm happy, and can smile it doesn't matter what others think. Its hard to explain man honestly, I just couldn't get that until I got it, if that makes sense. Its like halfway through the summer, BAM, I get it. Guys all in this thread were saying it too, I just didnt get it then.Comment
