Confusion (please don't move; this is meant here not in the on-line threads)

As the title stated, please leave this here. I am curious to know from people who DON'T play on-line, and if you move it they won't see it.

I am confused. I do not like on-line at all, really for anything except maybe chess. I used to play Baldur's Gate 2, but that was years ago with a friend about 800 miles away.

When I saw that poll that amazingly stated that MOST do not play on-line...well, I was very shocked. Virtually any review of any game I read now says (to the effect of) "Oh yeah, it's a pretty nice game, but the only way to really play it is on-line with friends."

The head of EA said about 2 years ago he will not green-lite anything anymore that does not have a massive (ie, over 1/2) on-line component. Mortal Kombat review said exactly the above. It seems that for about 10 years, with the invention of console internet and MMORPG TRS("that really suck", is what that means; my own invention, can you tell?), that virtually EVERYTHING is labeled in how it rates on-line and the play.

That leads me to the next thing; the real question here. Is it that this game sucks on-line? Is it that people do not do sports games on-line? Is this an anomoly? Is it only a certain breed of game, such as FPS (first-person shooters) or other specific sports or real-time strategy games?

I remember playing Age of Empires II against someone on-line with some others, a map he made, it was kind of fun, but it didn't last long and never did it again. A cool sports game called BLOOD BOWL (check it out, it is by Cyanide and Games Workshop) suffers from this malady of VIRTUALLY ALL players saying, "The only way to play this is on-line...single-player sucks...the AI sucks..." etc., etc.

Why was this poll SO COMPLETELY against on-line play? I am really curious to hear people's opinions who play this game. I have had MLB 09-11, think I might've had '08, I know I originally bought my PS3 because baseball is the game; I lived on Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball for so long...I think graphics on PC always dominate, plus you can customize so much more. I finally got sick of not having a baseball game, and seeing how this was the only one made, I actually went out in '07 or so and bought the PS3 for this game (so I think I did have '08, I think...).

I like PC gaming better, because of graphics and CPU power, plus the ability to customize (Pro Evolution Soccer...I cannot tell you how many thousands of uniforms...kits...I made for my teams; you cannot do that on consoles), but I am a baseball nut more than anything so I had to have this game once I tested it in a store.

I have never once played on-line. Never tried. Probably never will. I thought the "leagues" were one of the big deals with this game (your own with your buddies) so now I am confused that most do not go on-line.

Two more quick things; developers...obviously you have an incredible market for the single players, which leads me to say: MAKE historical seasons, tons of old ballparks and/or rosters from the 110 year history of this game...why do you not make them already? They used to have them for Earl Weaver Baseball 20 years ago...the stats games have them where you can but any season from 1900...I know it is not a stats game, but old players and ballparks...I think they would sell at least decently. I know that in this day of micro-transactions (which some games/company/people really abuse, charging a lot for things that SHOULD be included in the game), I would pay for the 1927 NY Yankee Stadium, or Ebbets Field, League Park, etc., or the 1951 season, or the 1927 season, or the 1986 season, or the 1975 season. I think you are missing out on an opportunity here...

Last, MODERATORS...I have twice had posts moved when I specifically asked not to have them moved. I want to hear from the "average Joe" player of this game. It has been my experience here that no questions are asked, no common sense is allowed for by the author, and decisions are made unilaterally and requests are not honored. If you are going to move this, just delete it because that would be against the entire point of this thread. I also have never had to ask any forum on three occasions to please leave a thread alone...except here, and twice so far that was ignored. Please...leave this.

I'm not sure exactly what your question is since there's a whole lot of other stuff in your post but I don't think you looked hard enough at the poll.

The poll wasn't "so COMPLETELY against on-line play". 58% that doesn't vs 42% that does.

It's a global, internet society now. If a game does not have an online multiplayer aspect it's gonna bomb. FPS games dominate the market and their primary mode of play is online. Call of Duty without online play is simply shooting dumb AI and quickly becomes stale. For FPS games the human element is key to their success. MMORPs suck the life out of people and generate HUGE money for their publishers. RTS games when played against the AI is repetitive and predictive. Interactions with other humans in these games is what makes them function and successful.

Some people like to have control over every aspect of their gaming and play at their own pace. Others like to play with the human element involved. If a game doesn't provide both aspects, it loses to one that does.

Just bringing up discussion, and wondering how people feel about it. I have noticed that people complain like crazy about no multi-player, or bad multi-player, but yet many of the boards I have seen seem to be about 75% people complaining about others and what idiots they are.

When playing a game and someone disconnects to avoid any type of loss or negative rating, it destroys it all to me. Why even bother on the hope that the person won't be a jerk.

Just wondering what others' views on this are. That poll surprised me, and I would call it more than 58-42%, one of the categories said 50/50 split...so that's unfair to classify it as MP.

It is a mass-media society, and I often think that people allow themselves to be manipulated in many ways because of it. I think this obsession with MP is one of them (and bless Todd Howard of Bethesda, a true gamer!).

I refuse to play sports games online, way too many disconnects and cheesers. Racing and shooters on the other hand, I love to play online.

I have never played this against a human opponent and I don't plan on ever doing so. I have played Madden and NHL online but mostly had negative experiences. In the NHL game I did the be a pro with a team made up of fellow penguin fans. Every single game we ended up going against people who basically did nothing but go for cheese goals that are essentially glitches. No teams ever tried to cycle the pucks, fire shots from the points, or do anything resembling an actual hockey game. The idea that it was going to be like a virtual pick up hockey game fell down the toilet fast and I lost interest. I find that basically with these games people opt to win at all costs even if it means exploiting a glitch in the game to do so.

Agreed. Games like Call of Duty I buy for online. NCAA 11 or MLB The Show I never play online and buy it for dynasty/franchise.

Bottom line: I hate most people and their win at all costs even if it means pulling out the most cheesy/exploitable BS play in the book if I'm losing.

In my experience, that's the large majority of the online population including those who claim to be "sim".

I was perfect thru 4 the other day and a guy quit on 2k11 in a 1 or 2 run game.

Hard enough to play it with the lag, then you have to deal with bums.

I think your main question was why isn't TheShow more popular online?

                    The only reason; lag.

I think I speak for the majority when I say I have no problem playing Madden online but refuse to play TheShow online. In football, nothing really happens within a fraction of a second that you cant see coming a few seconds away. So, even though the gameplay does change with lag, it doesn't kill the gaming experience totally.

Baseball, on the other hand, can not be played with any lag. You have a fraction of a second to decide whether or not to hit the ball. That is impossible if there is any lag; which is why you see all the perfect games, no hitters, 1 run, etc online.

PS; I love how much effort you put towards attempting to stop this thread from being moved which is why I had to check it out!
