I am confused. I do not like on-line at all, really for anything except maybe chess. I used to play Baldur's Gate 2, but that was years ago with a friend about 800 miles away.
When I saw that poll that amazingly stated that MOST do not play on-line...well, I was very shocked. Virtually any review of any game I read now says (to the effect of) "Oh yeah, it's a pretty nice game, but the only way to really play it is on-line with friends."
The head of EA said about 2 years ago he will not green-lite anything anymore that does not have a massive (ie, over 1/2) on-line component. Mortal Kombat review said exactly the above. It seems that for about 10 years, with the invention of console internet and MMORPG TRS("that really suck", is what that means; my own invention, can you tell?), that virtually EVERYTHING is labeled in how it rates on-line and the play.
That leads me to the next thing; the real question here. Is it that this game sucks on-line? Is it that people do not do sports games on-line? Is this an anomoly? Is it only a certain breed of game, such as FPS (first-person shooters) or other specific sports or real-time strategy games?
I remember playing Age of Empires II against someone on-line with some others, a map he made, it was kind of fun, but it didn't last long and never did it again. A cool sports game called BLOOD BOWL (check it out, it is by Cyanide and Games Workshop) suffers from this malady of VIRTUALLY ALL players saying, "The only way to play this is on-line...single-player sucks...the AI sucks..." etc., etc.
Why was this poll SO COMPLETELY against on-line play? I am really curious to hear people's opinions who play this game. I have had MLB 09-11, think I might've had '08, I know I originally bought my PS3 because baseball is the game; I lived on Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball for so long...I think graphics on PC always dominate, plus you can customize so much more. I finally got sick of not having a baseball game, and seeing how this was the only one made, I actually went out in '07 or so and bought the PS3 for this game (so I think I did have '08, I think...).
I like PC gaming better, because of graphics and CPU power, plus the ability to customize (Pro Evolution Soccer...I cannot tell you how many thousands of uniforms...kits...I made for my teams; you cannot do that on consoles), but I am a baseball nut more than anything so I had to have this game once I tested it in a store.
I have never once played on-line. Never tried. Probably never will. I thought the "leagues" were one of the big deals with this game (your own with your buddies) so now I am confused that most do not go on-line.
Two more quick things; developers...obviously you have an incredible market for the single players, which leads me to say: MAKE historical seasons, tons of old ballparks and/or rosters from the 110 year history of this game...why do you not make them already? They used to have them for Earl Weaver Baseball 20 years ago...the stats games have them where you can but any season from 1900...I know it is not a stats game, but old players and ballparks...I think they would sell at least decently. I know that in this day of micro-transactions (which some games/company/people really abuse, charging a lot for things that SHOULD be included in the game), I would pay for the 1927 NY Yankee Stadium, or Ebbets Field, League Park, etc., or the 1951 season, or the 1927 season, or the 1986 season, or the 1975 season. I think you are missing out on an opportunity here...
Last, MODERATORS...I have twice had posts moved when I specifically asked not to have them moved. I want to hear from the "average Joe" player of this game. It has been my experience here that no questions are asked, no common sense is allowed for by the author, and decisions are made unilaterally and requests are not honored. If you are going to move this, just delete it because that would be against the entire point of this thread. I also have never had to ask any forum on three occasions to please leave a thread alone...except here, and twice so far that was ignored. Please...leave this.

which is why I had to check it out!
