Propane or Charcoal, which do you prefer and why ?

So here is the situation. My family all use charcoal, growing up that way, I prefer the taste of charcoal, that smokey flavor. My wife and her family all use propane.

To me propane doesn't taste like BBQ, it taste like it was cooked in the kitchen.

And liquid smoke doesn't taste good at all. My wife and her family argue me up and down there is no difference in taste. Which to me is insane, I can clearly taste the difference between food cooked over charcoal and propane.

So what about you guys ? What do you prefer and why ?

Charcoal all the way. Just bought a new charcoal grill actually. I have propane too.

I go with Charcoal all the way. Not using Charcoal in the summertime to grill Hotdogs and Hambugers would not be the same. I love the taste of Hambugers grilled with Charcoal. I would go with the Charcoal.

I also like that charcoal is more of a production. It is much more conducive to relaxing and having a beer.

I prefer the taste of charcoal, but I don't have time to wait for it so I use propane. I still make a pretty good burger, but it just doesn't have the charcoal taste.

I have a little charcoal kettle (that needs replacing, I'm thinking about getting one of the boxy kind with the movable charcoal grate), a propane grill, an electric smoker and an offset smoker.

Propane for convenience, charcoal for things that need it/when I have extra time, offset smoker for larger smokes, electric smoker for unsupervised smokes.

So what about you guys ? What do you prefer and why ?

Out of those two I like charcoal for the same reason, it tests far better. However I like the quickness of propane. Hot dogs and Burgers on a Wednesday night? I do propane. BBQ chicken and steaks on Saturday? I use mesquite.

I will say though the to BBQ I actually prefer fruit and nut woods. Applewood and Almond wood are the two most used woods at my house to cook over.

It only takes 20 minutes to get charcoal ready for action. Not really sure how propane is that much easier.

Hmm never used almond wood before. Before I moved to the east coast, I use to use apple wood and cherry wood from time to time, not a whole lot though.

So can you use almond wood for any type of meat ? Or does it taste better with certain kinds of meat ?

It takes less than a minute to get propane ready. When I get home from work I don't want to wait 20 minutes for charcoal to be ready, then wait for the meat to cook. Much easier to just flip on the propane and get it going.
