Re: Propane or Charcoal, which do you prefer and why ?
My complex has free propane (and charcoal) grills available. The propane is just easier for me (preheat it a bit and good to go). Charcoal does taste better, but just more of a pain for me (I'm lazy). I have to make sure to have enough charcoal, work more to get it going, wait for it to really get hot, etc.
For me it's not really worth the time, but I totally understand where you guys are coming from! I'm just lazy and don't really care enough to spend my time dealing with charcoal.
If I didn't have free propane grills available (we're not allowed to have grills on patios, it's a fire hazard) then I'd have to think but probably do propane due to ease of use.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Now I'm craving a good charcoal cooked burger. Guess I'll be passing on the propane to grill out this weekend.Comment

You can do some cool stuff with a charcoal grill.
When the power was out for days, we cooked so much stuff on the grill. I even resorted to cooking cinammon rolls and cookies on the grill. Don't knock it 'til you try it.. they were some bad *** cookies.
I just took a pan and put the cookies on it, while filling up the entire pan and cooked one big cookie. After they were finished and cooled, I took a knife and cut them into actual cookies... good stuff.Comment

Re: Propane or Charcoal, which do you prefer and why ?
Time drives the answer.
Weekdays I go exclusively with propane. But usually I'm grilling marinated chicken breasts and occasionaly some burgers.
Weekends, I usually go with Charcoal, but it depends on the situation.
However, my propane grill has a seer burner on it, which is money for steaks. It gets up to like 600-700-800 degrees and I get that nice crust on the outside, then I pull it off and put it back on the main burners and let it cook for a few more minutes and I get a nice juicy center.
I can try and mimick this with charcoal, but the results are never the same.
If I'm cooking a whole chicken or a tri-tip roast or some fajita meat, charcoal, IMO, is the way to go.Comment

Re: Propane or Charcoal, which do you prefer and why ?
Here's my question:
My wife and I got a very cheap propane grill as a wedding present, and it lasted short of two summers before it developed a leak that I can't find the source of (ie, it isn't the hose, so it's likely in the burner or valve area) and even if I could find it I'm not sure I could find a replacement part or that it would be worth spending the money to repair it.
Now that the exposition is out of the way, here's the actual question. We have a small deck (second floor apartment) and while I'd very much prefer charcoal, I'm not sure it's safe on a small apartment deck. We don't need anything big since it's just the two of us, and I won't mind the work involved with cleaning up after cooking, but is a charcoal grill safe enough to use in our situation? I've never actually cooked with charcoal, and by the time I was old enough to take notice of the process my grandfather had already switched to propane, so I really am sort of clueless in this area.Impact de Montréal

Re: Propane or Charcoal, which do you prefer and why ?
One of my best friends has an apartment that's ground level, but the back deck they have is up in the air above the end apartment's patio. They have no problems maintaining a charcoal grill and it's not really a fire hazard. If you're too concerned, you could always use the match-lite charcoal that doesn't require the starter fluid.Comment
