Yeah I know what you're saying... but even here in Washington, Seattle gets quakes- you go 1 to 2 hours east, and your safe from everything. I guess because tornadoes have seasons 2x a year, it seems a little more plausible to avoid them than an earthquake.

I've seen enough tornado videos in the past 2, 3 weeks then I'd care to see in a lifetime. Gosh.

I'm glad I live in the Northeast. We sometimes get the tail end of hurricanes, and we get blizzards, but it's nothing compared to that or the earthquakes that can wreak havoc in the West.

I'm staying in this area, man.

That home video was far scarier than any bull**** "ghost" or "alien" video that has ever been posted on this site.

        Wow, just wow...

This makes it the deadliest individual tornado since the Worcester, MA tornado on June 9, 1953 when 94 people were killed. The day before on June 8, 1953 around 116 people were killed in the Flint, MI tornado. So we're probably looking at the deadliest individual tornado in almost 60 years.
          Unbelievable.

Now they're saying that the death toll is up to 116.

            1 3/18/1925 Tri-State (MO/IL/IN) 695
            2 5/6/1840 Natchez MS 317
            3 5/27/1896 St. Louis MO 255
            4 4/5/1936 Tupelo MS 216
            5 4/5/1936 Gainesville GA 203
            6 4/9/1947 Woodward OK 181
            7 4/24/1908 Amite LA, Purvis MS 143
            8 6/12/1899 New Richmond WI 117
            9 5/22/2011 Joplin, MO 116
            10 6/8/1953 Flint MI 115
            11 5/11/1953 Waco TX 114
            11 5/18/1902 Goliad TX 114
And the worst part is, Joplin is currently under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning at this very moment. Even if no other damage occurs, the fact that they can't even have a clear day to clean up is bad enough. Really makes the rescue efforts even more difficult.

They're under a moderate risk for severe weather, including tornadoes, tomorrow as well. I'm an hour away, and the weather has been horrible today. It's unbelievable seeing the complete devastation that happened there.

Wow! That's crazy. I feel bad for the people that have to go through these disaters.

They still talk about the 1953 Tornado here.

Crazy thing about that list, before the tornado in Joplin, the next closet one on the list was 58 years ago.

30 years ago my parents left the midwest for eastern Washington to get away from tornadoes and bitter winters. This area is about as safe as it gets from natural disasters...until we get another ice age and Lake Missoula decides to flood us under hundreds of feet of raging water. I'll be sure to move before that happens.

Thoughts go out to those affected by the tornado.

The discussion probably shouldn't be in this thread, but I'd rather live anywhere besides an earthquake zone. At least you can somewhat expect the others to happen. For earthquakes, you have no idea when or where they're gonna strike.

Prayers for Joplin, and anywhere being affected by these twisters. Absolutely INsane.

Praying for Joplin. This beats what happened here...by far. We still had our infrastructure after the fact.

Not to be OT, the only place you don't hear of something like floods/ quakes/ tornadoes is in Montana or Idaho, but it snows 6 months out of the year and the blizzards are a mother. Saying that, I have thought about moving there a couple of times.

As to earthquakes in MO/AR/TN/Bama, there is the New Madrid fault line, Wabash fault line, South Appalachian fault line and the E. TN Fault line, though the last two are small. If a 7.7 hit Memphis it would be catastrophic, but if an 8 or higher hit Memphis only 40% of the standing structures in Memphis would remain. On top of that Memphis is the transportation hub of the middle US and it would cause all of America to slow down. It would make Katrina look like no big deal. makes me glad I moved away.

Back on topic, I am glad the governor sent in the Guard. With infrastructure down help was needed ASAP.
