Re: The Numbers Game: Is College Worth The Cost?

State of Florida Bright Futures Program paid for 100 percent of my tuition for all four years and then some.

My point exactly. Don't get an English degree unless you are teaching English. Math degrees transfer to a lot of different things. However, if you go to school, get a degree in Engineering, a medical field, IT; basically a degree that points to your chosen profession. Doctor, lawyer, dentist, nurse, Engineer, pharm tech, etc. They pay for themselves. The reason I didn't get into teaching is the pay isn't worth the cost. You spend at least ten years paying off student loans and the costs on top of tuition (projects) is not covered in scholarships. Do I wish I had been able to finish? I quit due to health reasons, but looking back my BA in business wouldn't have landed me that great of a job out of college. I would have needed at least an MBA. Even then there are a lot of MBA's on the unemployment line at the moment.

If I go back it will be for IT/net security.

Well a good job can offset tuition down the line. Im saying dont go to private 50 thousand a year college when a 10 thousand a year is sitting in your backyard. Private colleges, especially if you are paying the whole way through, are not worth it.

I know 20 year doctors who still to this day refuse to pay their crazy private school loans...I dont know how wise that is but even doctors can afford that mess lmao.

I go to a private school now at SU but I have a hell of a deal the school offered me out of HS, studying Bio with a focus on genetics and Pre-Med. Dont go to an SU and major in philosophy............

Intelligence doesn't have a grade level, degree, or title.

I know some folks who have all these degree and I wouldn't trust them to get anything done.

I don't really think it matters.

Depends on what you want to do.

I'm in the medical field, so yes college was worth the cost and absolutely neccesary

It depends on what you major in. I'm majoring in Political Science but the Government pays for it. If I had to pay out of pocket I wouldn't go to college. Too much debt for me.

I'm really excited to start college in a few weeks, looking forward to the experience and education. Majoring in Elementary Education, and a lot of county's in FL offer a thing where if I sign a contract that i'll work for atleast 5 years in their district the government will forgive my loans. So combine that with the various grants I can get, 75% of my tuition being covered, etc I think it'll be worth the cost for me atleast.

You should be able to get that without the agreement. Assuming Bright Futures makes it past the budget cuts. Have you looked into it? I just graduated, so I have not kept up with the changes as much as I should have, but (at least when I was in HS) getting the 75% tuition paid was not difficult at all.

I'm going to do that in SC. I just finished my 3rd year teaching high school biology in a rural district. In 2 years it will pay off the remainder of my student loans (roughly $15K).

In SC you have to be in an underserved/rural district and teaching one of the critical subjects (science,, math, special education) All excludes elementary education.

I know man, but have you looked into your Bright Futures eligibility? You may be able to get the 75% for doing nothing.

I just learned today that I'm going to owe $138,000 on a federal loan of roughly $90,000 for my next three years of school. I want to be a teacher. I eventually want to get my masters and PhD. in something history related so I can teach at the college level. I'm currently asking myself if this is really worth it.
