On today's episode of Great Moral Dilemmas of the Day, we bring you the perplexing case of a vigilante pharmacist. The year was 2009, and Jerome Ersland was working at Reliable Pharmacy, the store he owned in Oklahoma City. It would not be a good day...

Two armed punks came in and tried to rob the store. Ersland, not a druggist to be trifled with, pulled out a gun and shot 16-year-old Antwun Parker in the head.

Video of the incident shows the second mope fleeing. Ersland follows him out of the store, but the bad guy is already gone.

It would seem an open and shut case of self-defense -- until security cameras depict what happened next.

Erland returned to the store and could be seen digging for something behind the counter. Then he retrieved another gun and methodically moved toward Parker, who was laying wounded on the floor. Just to make sure Parker lost his interest in robbery, Ersland pumped him full of five more bullets, killing him.

In Oklahoma City, he was hailed as a hero for taking out a bad guy. Parker's accomplices, Anthony Morrison and Emanuel Mitchell, were subsequently convicted of first-degree murder in the death of their friend, plus conspiracy for organizing the heist.

But jurors didn't seem so enthralled with Ersland once they learned the full breadth of the incident. In court, his defense was hoping to shoot for a manslaughter charge. The jury decided instead to convict him of murder.

He won't be sentenced till July 11, but he faces the possibility of life with parole.

So what do you think, dearest reader? Was this a case of a man simply protecting himself and his employees? Or was this merely a cold-blooded execution disguised as heroism?

It wasn't wrong to shoot the guy in the first place, since they were armed and trying to rob him. To finish him off in that way is criminal though, and very cold-hearted. At that point he became as bad as the guys trying to rob him.

That's how I feel as well. The guy was no longer a threat.

Part of me is thinking the guy could have still been a threat even after getting shot - you don't really know if he was carrying anything else. But if I'm reading right the self-defense shot was a headshot, so yeah - given those circumstances it doesn't seem like he would have been much of a threat anymore.

I'm surprised the initial headshot didn't kill the guy, honestly.

The Initial shooting was justified self defense, from there on it's murder. If he had shot the guy, and he was still trying to pull something, shooting again would be fine as well. But putting 5 rounds into an incapacitated person, is taking it way too far.

I'm with this. The guy wasn't a threat so there's no reason to do any more. The rest should've been up to law enforcement.

As others have said I think initially he was right in self defense. But shooting an incapated person who no longer posed a threat 5 more times? That is wrong.

Yeah, i'd say it's pretty cut and dry here. The first shot was justified, the following five clearly were unnecessary. Like someone said, it's possible he had another weapon, but highly unlikely he posed a threat after being shot in the head. Plus, five shots? Lock him up.

Kid shouldn't have put himself in that position.

An unconscious person is no longer an immediate threat. At the same time, that kid was asking for trouble and he got the worst kind.

He became a vigilante after the first shot.

Is there any chance the additional shots were out of mercy? Was the kid laying in agony? Like maybe you hit an animal with your car and instead of letting it lay there to slowly suffer you finish it off? I know, it's different, I'm just trying to find a way to justify it. If I was his attorney I'd have tried the mercykill defense.
