    "Pay What You Can" Restaurant

    Link

    Interesting...

After a year, Panera Bread's experiment with "pay what you can" restaurants seems to be working. The cafe chain now has three locations using the donations-only model (Clayton, Mo., Dearborn, Mich., and Portland, Ore.), out of its nearly 1,500 locations nationwide.

"We were doing this for ourselves to see if we could make a difference with our own hands, not just write a check, but really make a contribution to the community in a real, substantive way," Panera founder and Chairman Ronald Shaich told The[..]ociated Press. The program, which Panera calls "Panera Cares," is an example of a "community kitchen," the AP says, in which for-profit companies act in part like nonprofits.

Most patrons, it finds, drop the entire retail cost, or more, into the voluntary donation box, in essence subsidizing a meal for someone who can't pay the full amount. Panera says about 60 percent leave the suggested amount; 20 percent leave more; and 20 percent leave less. The largest single payment so far? One person paid $500 for a meal.

Few people seem to be taking unfair advantage of the system. Most know that wouldn't be fair. Not paying when you could "is like parking in a handicapped spot," Mr. Shaich says.

"The lesson here is most people are fundamentally good," he says. "People step up and they do the right thing."

SOUND OFF: What do you think of this idea? How much would you be willing to pay?

The cafes, which serve soups, sandwiches, and baked goods, look just like other Panera stores. But there are donation boxes instead of cash registers, though employees can process credit card payments as well.

The company also participates in more conventional charity programs, such as donating unused baked goods to churches, schools, and hunger relief organizations, says a story in at Cleveland.com. “Before a cafe even opens, we have organizations set up to receive day-end donations. Not a single item goes to waste,” says Panera regional marketing director Cara Sutch.

At the Portland, Ore., cafe, Carl von Rohr bought a bowl of potato soup and a cup of coffee and paid a dollar more than the suggested donation price (the retail price), says a story in the Portland Tribune.

“I’m willing to give this concept a try,” Mr. von Rohr said. “You walk [outside] and there are a number of people asking for money, and you never know what they’re going to do with it. You put in the extra money here, and you know they’re feeding people with basically healthy food.”

So people come in, order, and are asked to pay what they want for the meal (they are given an estimated price for basis)?

I would never do anything like that with a business. I do support them giving unused items to charity and the needy.

Yeah, I've been to the Dearborn one... There's a menu up on the overhead wall that lists all the prices like in a normal Panera, but it says "Suggested Donation" Not exactly sure if the prices are higher/lower than other normal PB's though.

At the time I went it was pretty packed, but I didn't see anyone not pay at least some amount.

Wait till more people find out about this. You'll see the shady folk walking in with nothing and leaving happy.

I heard Jon Bon Jovi(maybe I read it here) has a similar family restaurant in NJ. It's much different, though, as the community helps out cooking and dish washing if they can't pay all for the meal.

Much better type set up, I feel.

Exactly. In a perfect world this is a great idea. In this world I see it being exploited.

              Bingo!

This kind of setup could only work in smaller communities and/or rural areas. If you tried something like this in a major metropolitan area i'm afraid it'd get exploited to the hilt.

I would consider Portland a major metropolitan area, with about 2.2 million living in the Portland Metropolitan area.

I do agree that this will not work once it gets more known and/or shows up in more locations.

Portland is wired a LOT differently than most other major cities though. Which, in cases such as the subject at hand, is a very good thing.

Yeah an NYC spot like this would run well for a month, then the exploits will run ramped. Small well nit areas is ideal. Where everyone knows your name.

Yeah I don't think it would work well most places, I go to Panera on my lunch break once in a while and its pretty expensive IMO, if they started this here I'd probably want to pay less lol.

Its like $8 for a half a sandwich and a bowl of soup, more if you want a soda.

Yeah I like Panera but it is quite expensive. I'll be honest I would be tempted to pay less if there was a "Pay What You Can" Panera near me.

I would probably get whatever I want (probably half sandwich, soup, and lemonade) and leave a ten. Really like that Panera is doing this and that it is working out for them. Also, on a semi-related note, I have wanted to visit Portland for forever now, and this just is another reminder.
