I agree with you guys. I would think it's only a matter of time until someone ruins it.

I can't say that I would pay full price if I went and got something to eat there. I know I wouldn't pay over full price.

It's interesting... I think this works for Panera because of the branding which helps get people through the door, rather than a mom and pop place that has less recognition.

Then there's that Starbucks effect where people pay a premium for foods that cost less to make... I think there are enough people that pay over the amount suggested (keep the change!) to cover the ones that pay less or nothing.

Then there's that sociology experiment... You have servers standing behind the counter and the folks in the queue watching who puts money in the box and who doesn't. If I saw a Armani suit wearing dude not donate anything, I'd probably point and laugh at him on the spot.

This is probably what I would do as well. Get something that's usually around eight dollars or so and just leave a ten.

Same here. As it is, if I'm paying for something that's close to a 10 or 20 and I get back a dollar or two and some change, I just throw it in their tip jar. I know how it feels to work those jobs, getting a little cash tips is such a bright spot in an otherwise usually dreary job.
