    Re: Sports injuries

I have sprained both of my ankles at least 5 times each.

I also dislocated my pinky going for a steal...we were up 20 and there was about 5 seconds left on the clock.

      Re: Sports injuries

I completely screwed up my Tailbone playing league roller hockey when I was 12 after I got dumped on my *** behind the net, which made doing almost anything hurt. Then i played through it, which was excruciating. Skating with a screwed up tailbone was so painful mostly because the floor we played on was like a linoleum tiled floor so everytime I hit one of the grooves between squares it felt like I had lightning bolts shooting through my body.

Definitely not one of my better ideas that's for sure.

        Re: Sports injuries

Need a diagnosis, fellas. Ignore the italics for the story behind the injury.

Last Monday I filled in for my colleague's slow pitch softball team, despite my foot injury (I can be mobile in small doses at a time). It was on a turf field and we can't wear metal spikes, so I had to wear track shoes. I was slipping all over the place, myself. I'm the tenth man at a rover position, a bloop goes over my head that I chase after, the CF calls me off and as I attempt to stop, I slip and fall on my glove hand, as it sort of broke my fall.

It didn't hurt at the time, but I tried to swing maybe the next half-inning and upon following through from the right side, it was killer. I'm a switch-hitter so swinging lefty wasn't a problem with me, even though it sort of hurt then too. Better than right-handed at least.

The next morning my left hand was in pretty bad pain, from rotating it to lifting up my laptop. I don't think typing was very comfortable either. Anyway, fast-forward to Saturday and I'm hitting grounders with a fungo. First swing, and the bat flies out of my left hand on the follow-through. It still hurts like a bitch. It doesn't hurt normally in any other scenario: rotating, pressure, or even catching a ball. But the weight of the bat on the wrists moving gives me a sharp pain on the outside part of my hand (on the pinky side, more so on the back of the hand).

Does anybody know what this is? Of course I'll seek an appointment, but with time not exactly on my side and this "injury" not being very urgent, I was wondering if anybody kind of just knew what this was.

        Thanks.

Sounds like it could be a broken Hamete bone. It's a tiny hook-bone in the wrist that hitters break a lot when the wrists roll over/snap through on a swing. Though, I've always heard that there is only pain in a swinging motion, so I'm not sure at all.

Yeah, as I said the only pain I currently have is when swinging. I'm typing as we speak (obviously), and I'm squeezing my hand as hard as I can. I can slightly feel a little something in it if I shake my hand violently, though that's only because I'm paying attention to it. I can't feel it otherwise... only when I swing (and more so right-handed than left-handed).

It sounds like it's worth getting an x-ray for, then. At least I have something to go on, so I'll look at Web M.D. and such and see what else a hamate bone does or whatever.

Thanks for a direction! We'll see where this goes or what it means.

Oh and by the way, there is zero swelling or discoloring or anything lie that. I have yet to notice any whatsoever.

              Re: Sports injuries

Swinging right sounds like you have pain with ulnar deviation, but picking up a lap top would be radial deviation of your wrist. Losing grip usually means a nerve injury.

              I'd seek medical attention.

And is it pain or numbness? Is the feeling in your whole hand or does it radiate to certain digits.

Okay, I just meant that the next morning I was having pain with doing that. Right now, the only time I ever really feel it is with swinging. I forgot that I even had any pain until I took a swing on Saturday, because I was pain-free for two or three days (no swinging during that time though lol).

It is a sharp pain, definitely not numbness. It is not in my whole hand. If you stick your left hand out in front of you, it feels like it's on the "bottom left" of it. The pain feels more on the "back" side than the palm side as well, or so I recall. I don't know, I don't really want to swing a bat right now lol.

                  Heh, no worries.

Look up a diagram of ulnar, medial, and radial nerves. Sounds like it could be an impingement around the retinaculum. Idk, it's hard to tell without seeing anything. I work OT in geriatrics but spent some time doing outpatient ortho.

Played sports my whole life and never broke a bone. :/

I remember when I was younger I would see people in casts and for some reason wanted to break a bone so bad.

I faked a sprained ankle once so I could use crutches. (Lacrosse season)

I have an issue with my ulner nerve. Whenever I lift, anytime I let go of a grip, it feels like someone is stabbing me in the forearm. I was initially going to say it may be that but his symptoms seem to point elsewhere.

                        Re: Sports injuries

                        My injury list:

Had right shoulder surgery my senior year of college for partially torn rotator cuff, labrum, and biceps tendon. Had the tendon severed and re-attached and lost about 2 inches of reach on my right arm.

Next was probably a torn ACL or meniscus in my right knee. I didn't have insurance at the time, so I never got it checked out by a doctor, but the AT at the school I coach at was pretty sure it was one of those 2 injuries. I was on crutches for 2 weeks, then about 4 months before I could run around and be really active again. It still bothers me from time to time, but it's nothing major anymore.

Most recent was a broken hand courtesy of punching a padded wall in frustration. Broke the 3, 4, 5 metacarpals and displaced them all. Had surgery to repair them about 3 months ago. My grip strength has been severely reduced, and I'm not sure it will ever come back to what it was. I can't make a tight fist, but I can throw and shoot well enough. I'll probably start lifting weights again soon, starting off with light dumbbells and progress from there.

That's been is so far.. two surgeries, probably should've had a third. I'll probably go get my knee checked out eventually... we'll see.

Dislocated my left knee back in 2009. I used to be well over 300 pounds and 6'4. I always played PG(don't ask me how lol) anyway I was going to dunk over my friend and ended being way to high than I expected.

Long story short my big *** was in the air and came down hard *** hell and putting all 350 pounds on my left knee. By the time a got to the doctors my knee somehow got back together. I can feel it moving it was weird and an freaky accident. Was on crutches/pills for about 3 months.Had some scholarships from small D1 schools for football but after that **** I was too scared to play again.

Baseball: Torn Rotator Cuff, Broken big toe, (got slid into) lacerated scalp )got plowed into at home plate the back of my head slammed into the ground and split open, but I held on to the ball for the out.

Football: Torn ACL on the 4th play of my freshman year. Missed the rest of the season. Grade 2 ankle sprain. Missed a couple of 2 a days. Was told I would be out for the year. It was my senior year so eff that.

All my injuries pretty much effect me today with the exception of the broken toe.

I can't throw a baseball anywhere near the quality that I used to be able to.

My knee and ankle hurt from time to time. They crack a lot too. My knees in general are pretty crappy since I was a catcher for about 20 years.

There are days where my arm feels pretty good after throwing BP for a little bit, so I'll ask someone to stretch it out with me and once I really try to let go, it feels like my shoulder is going to fly right out of the socket...

My pinky is a walking sideshow for my family and friends.

In HS, I jammed it playing volleyball. While still jammed, I played basketball a day later, which dislocated the finger. I popped it back into place during the game.

A couple days later, I had a volleyball tournament, where I proceeded to dislocate it again, and then finally break the bone according to the team doctor.

I had the option of going to the doctors to have them fix it (by rebreaking my bone and set it in place to look normal) but my young dumb self was like "I AIN'T PAYIN NO DOCTA MONEY TO BREAK MAH FINGA'S!"

And the crooked "S" shaped pinky was born. Pictures can be provided if you like.

I can't make the finger straight.. when I try, it immediately snaps into an "S" which makes everyone cringe..
