    I figured this time of year, they would be running sales, and at least a couple are.

    23andMe normally costs $119 but is down to $59 until Christmas Day. AncestryDNA is regularly $99 but is on sale for $39.

    I would recommend that you all read the privacy policies of whoever you may go with. FamilyTreeDNA is one that I have heard some good things about in the past, but it is worth noting that they have recently made admission to sharing information about their clientele with law enforcement. What that entails exactly, I haven't been able to find out.

    It could mean they are openly cooperative with police investigations and subpoenas, but it could also mean that they actively share their database of DNA with federal or international law enforcement, which opens the doors for problems. While it seems safe, one simple leak or breach of confidence at the law enforcement level (and that is not uncommon), then that shared database could be exploited and turned over to a third party intending to cause harm.
