    Re: East coast Earthquake

Felt here in central PA, it was ridiculous. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me at first. Then I checked the national earthquake site and found out I wasn't going insane.

Like you said, it's just that earthquakes are so rare in this part of the country and the fact that this one was felt over such a wide area. I bet by tomorrow most will have put the earthquake to the back burner and coverage will again be focused on Irene.

It seems like every time I check the Unisyss hurricane/tropical storm data site, the projected track has shifted further to the east.

I guess I don't understand what you are looking for?

There is still coverage of the hurricane but this is something that happened today, and as previously mentioned, is something that a lot of people have never experienced. People want to read about it which is why it is getting so much coverage.

It doesn't mean people have forgot about the pending disaster or what it could cause but I just don't see what you want? They can't cover the the current status of the hurricane all day.

So just because they are from California means they aren't allowed to joke? I saw plenty of northern east coast people laughing at the South during the snowstorms they didn't know how to handle well. I just really don't think that people should be taking the jokes all to seriously, there's always ribbing going on based on weather or even like you stated Marino, when Cali closed down the freeway. Everyone else sat back and laughed. I really don't think its this serious personally. But we are all entitled to different opinions so whatever I guess.

It was a once in a lifetime (or multiple lifetimes) ordeal for those of us on this side of the country. It was crazy to have experienced it, to think that people experience these types of things elsewhere on a more frequent basis is kind of mind boggling. A lot of people felt it, a lot of people didn't. I guess it kind of sucks for those who didn't, because they can say they were alive when it happened, but not that they actually experienced it.

I know it's just joking, I just think it's kinda dumb. People here really think they're better, at least the people I've interacted with regarding it.

I work on a Marine Corps base where depending on range activity for the day you might feel ground tremors from artillery fire. During my active duty tour I was stationed at Camp Fuji, a still active volcano, and there were quakes - but very small ones - some would feel them, others would not.

Yesterday was like nothing I had ever experienced, the building I was in felt like it was in a wave. The cinderblocks I had my hand on felt like the were moving back and forth indivdually.

This was all in all a great experience. Taught me:

                    1. I do not want to work far from home. I literally have an 18 min commute into work. If I was working in DC and living where I am now I would have never made it home to my family....especially if a catostrophic event had occurred.

                    2. Cannot rely on communication devices. Either they were outright down, or so many people were trying to use them they could not function.

                    3. Regarding #2....need to invest in some long range radios or something to have a comm link to family. Without comm there is nothing.

                    4. Need a family plan in place outlining all things to do in the event of _____________ .

This is what I don't think a lot of people are getting (not the plan... great thoughts there, btw. Of course I work an hour and a half from home in NoVa but anway). Jokes are jokes, of course. But from what I'm hearing from folks that have been in earthquakes on the West coast (including my cousin who's lived in LA and who's made recent trips to Japan), this one felt ... different.

It seems that bc of the difference (and number) of the fault lines, earthquakes on the West are different than on the East. I doubt the West coast gets many quakes in LA that are felt in Mexico, Canada, Arizona, Vegas, etc. This bad boy sent tremors down to Georgia? While also up to Toronto and over to Ohio? That's crazy... 5.8 or 8.8. I'm sure the West coasters that felt it weren't as freaked out as those of us that have never felt a quake, but still a crazy experience.

I'm getting sick of all the news too (I'm ready to hear about this hurricane that's about to ruin my beach trip), but considering we're so close to the 10 year anniversary of 9/11, when a slow rumbling turns into your building shaking anywhere near the DC area (or NYC for that matter), people are going to panic. And don't forget we have no idea what to do, what to expect, etc. The aftermath of ignorance is worse than actual damage. I will say that I don't wish a hurricane on you folks in Cali though. I want no parts of another earthquake, but I can't imagine how ugly that situation would be if a hurricane hit out there.
