I'm a Mechanical Engineer. Majored in, well, Mechanical Engineering. I later went on to get my M.S. in Operations Management. While I do get to interact with many people, it is not directly with an end customer/user. I worked in the Auto industry for many years, and recently transitioned to the Aerospace industry. However, I've always been told that I'm not much of a people person, LOL

My wife is more the people person, she is a Speech & Language Therapist, so she helps people (mostly children) directly everyday. It is definitely satisfying for her to provide service to the public, and meet different people and families. I've learned quite a bit about various disorders and conditions from just being around her.

Bottom line, pursue something that you enjoy. That is most important, IMO. If you do, it will seem less like a job/studying, and more like you are getting paid to do something you enjoy. I definitely wish you luck in your decision.

        Re: What is YOUR Career?

When I was picking majors for college, I had the mindset of "pick the thing you want to do the most, regardless of money or job availability."

Now, I'm not going to tell you that you should pick the career with the best job outlook, but you can't overlook job prospects.

A year after I graduated I still didn't have a job in Journalism and made the dive into management. It's not that I don't enjoy what I do now (I actually really like working with the public every day at my job now, love the challenge and competition of making my location the best, and make better money than I would have with a job using my degree), but I can't help but have that lingering feeling in the back of my head that I am $40,000 in debt now just so I could have four years of partying and a fancy piece of paper.

To re-iterate, find something you like, something that has a decent job outlook, and something will make you enough money to live. Don't focus solely on money and job availability, but don't ignore it like I did.

I recently got my degree with a double major in Africana Studies and Sociology with a minor in Political Science. While I attempt to enter a grad program, I am doing the same job as I was doing at the age of 16 (sports bar cook). Do something you like, but be realistic about future prospects.

Professional Man of Mediocrity! Seriously though I echo a lot of the statements others have made about finding something you like/love and that has a good job outlook, which may take some research on your behalf. I graduated with a B.A. in Graphic Design, and till this day have not had a job involving that degree. I'm kind of envious of superjames, because if I had it all to do over again I would go the meteorology route since I'm a huge weather nerd.

                            BS in Accounting.

As someone else said, definitely weigh all your options, positives and negatives.

For me, it came down to Accounting or Mechanical Engineering.

I believe I made a good choice. I graduated in May of this year, and had a job in line, already. I get to see the greatest(for the most part) city in the world and all the people in it on a daily basis. I've never had Nights/Weekends off since I started working, so it has been great!

Also, I will be going for an advanced degree, and also going for my CPA soon.

Opportunities are endless in Accounting, Engineering, IT, etc.

If you have any interest whatsoever, I would definitely look into IT.

If you are into Auditing, IS Auditing will definitely continue to rise. CISA certification will mean just as much as a CPA.

I love weather and forecasting it, in particular.

Plus, NC State has a pretty good meteorology program and isn't too far from home (High Point, NC).
