I'd say that's when you just need 2 things:
    1) The ability to go up with either hand
    2) And the strength to fend off the defender with your arm/shoulder/body on the other side

If you go can up with the other hand, the only option they've got is to foul you. It especially helps if you can get "under" them, effectively cutting them off from the basket, giving you a clear lane.

For instance, if I beat a guy off the dribble going left, and he's staying somewhat close to me, but I've got a step, I won't just go straight to the basket, because then I'm also giving him a clear lane at the basket and a chance to get his hands into me or to block the shot. Instead, I'd veer slightly back inside or use a hop step to get myself between him and the basket, and then use my momentum to finish. For instances like that, if you can do a layup "right next" to the basket, that helps. As in, just a split second after you release, your hand is basically hitting the backboard. That leaves very little time for the ball to be swatted away, and you're using the rim to block anyone trying to come from the weakside.

I am not sure if that helped at all

Euro step haha. Or jump-stop and lean into contact w both elbows up, almost double clutch it.

There are a lot of options if you've got your defender on your hip. That's another situation where you're clearly in charge. When you get to the basket, it's another case of ensuring you maintain your body between your defender and the ball. And if a help defender slides over, remain aware of your other options on the floor.

I mean, again, maybe there's nothing wrong with your finger roll. Maybe your coach is just messing with you. Maybe he's pushing you to finish with the dunk instead. But I do know the fear should not be there on a drive. When I'd question something in my game, I'd often sit and think what an NBA player would do. And guys my size, like Deron Williams, get up and down the floor quicker than I ever will and they're not afraid of attacking 7 footers in the paint. As such, I knew I could push myself to be even faster than I already considered myself to be and I knew there's no way I should be fearful of encountering high school or college defenders in the paint.

For a long time, I didn't even know the best way to neutralize a shot blocker waiting for me in the paint. But then I found out, driving and rising directly at a big man (as opposed to trying to avoid them as you jump) can often neutralize their shot blocking ability. And knowing the blocked shot is less likely of an outcome, there's even more incentive for going hard to the hoop. And players may block your shot anyway. It happens. To everyone. A lot. It's common to have a sense of fear when you drive, but when you break it down logically, there's nothing to be afraid of.

Also, make sure you make the most of your two steps and your finish. Maxattax mentioned the Euro step and that's definitely one possibility. But there's also so much more. Theoretically, two steps from a 6'5'' person like yourself could carry you from beyond the high school three point line on up to the rim without a dribble. And in that case, I do think the finger roll is an effective tool to have. But also use your imagination. You can do anything you want with those two steps. If I get into the paint and pick up my dribble with no defender in position to remain directly in front of me, I'm finding a way to get to the rim, even if it means I have to act like a running back for a second and shell that ball up.

The possibilities are endless. Be creative. Be aggressive. Be strong, even if you're skinny.

P.S. Keep the pull-up jumper in mind, even the little one from about 8 feet away in the paint. In a half court set, particularly in a high school setting, it can become relatively easy for a defense to load up with a zone to protect the inside of the paint. Often, the little jumper is going to be the best thing an offense can get. Of course, don't stop attacking the paint. I'm just want to make sure you have counter moves for you moves. That's what a lot of basketball is about. Having primary moves, then moves to counter a defense trying to stop that primary move, then a move to counter that. Put yourself in your defenders shoes and think about what would suck about guarding you.

I used this for 4ish weeks one summer (before getting too busy with work and school), and I noticed a difference in just that time of a few inches. It's a ton of work, but it'll definitely work your legs.
ha, I've used airalert. It will whoop you real good but you will be better/bigger/faster/stronger for it.
