Not entirely annoying, but I've noticed more and more people are using "the" less when talking about things. Is using "the" improper grammar?

For example, when talking about the playoffs, I hear "NBA finals" more than "the NBA finals", or "Stanley cup" more than "the Stanley cup". Just sounds off to me hearing "The winner advances to NBA Finals" or something like that. MLS especially I notice they always seem to say "MLS cup" instead of "the MLS cup".

Or when talking about a venue. Most it does feel weird adding "the" to it, but lets use the Jays. Their building is called Rogers Centre, but when talking about it, I'll call it "the Rogers Centre". Although, in the same way, I won't say "the Fenway park", so it makes me feel like using "the" in any instance is wrong?

I don't use "the" in front of these. I would say "I hope the Blue Jays will play at Rogers Centre later this year."

Although, I do have one particular annoyance with a use of the word "the" with regard to naming highways. In Southern California, people would say something like "Take the 5 to the 8 and you'll hit the beach," instead of "Take 5 South to 8 West and you'll hit the beach" like a Northern Californian would say it.

It's bad enough that they often don't indicate direction, but what is up with using "the" here? The reasoning I always get is because it's the name of something, but I don't hear them saying "Turn right on the El Camino Blvd," and that's a name for something.

I don't know, I never liked it. I can imagine other areas do this as well, and it just sounds off.

I've always been put off by the fact that the Ramones is actually just Ramones, even though in everyday conversation no normal person is going to force themselves into not referring to them as The Ramones.

conversely, we have "the offspring", one of the first bands I can remember specifically having "the" in the title, and most people drop the "the" anyway



well I guess "the beatles" would be first now that I think of it, but people don't call them just Beatles, so idunno what I'm getting at.

I always found it weird that in California, they refer to their highways/freeways with “The”.

It is somewhat justified.. can't drive 10 miles near the LA suburbs without crossing a different freeway.

.. lived in a town close to the Canadian border, they did the same thing with all the major roads.

You just say "Take 10 West to 5 South," or "Go west on 10 and then south on 5" or whatever. Leave "the" out and indicate direction all the meanwhile.

I think you can bundle LA and The Southern Bay Area (San Jose, "The Silicon Valley") together somewhat in terms of the people, but The North Bay has a different vibe. It's old retired rich vs young and stupid rich.

(and yes I capitalized and added "The" everywhere to be annoying)

Every time I see someone comment online to some tweet or something else, someone else always has to reply with "ratio" and that's it.

I don't even know what that means.

It's where a tweet gets a much larger number of replies (indicating that a lot of people disagree with it) than likes or retweets (which would show approval).

Sometimes happens with genuine comment, but is usually done where Person A makes an intentionally controversial statement to generate those types of replies, which then gives Person A a reason to reply further, generating more replies, etc.

Engagement is king on Twitter and generating angry anonymous arguing gets the job done.

I think Geraldo Rivera is the king of ratios at this point lol. For some reason I follow him on Twitter and he has found himself an audience that mostly disagrees with him, I guess.

But in general the vote up/vote down nature of twitter is reason #987 why it really shouldn't be taken seriously as any kind of place for meaningful discussion.
