Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned

Has anyone here ever frosted a window? Did you use the roll-on film stuff or the spray? I think I want to frost the large window above my front door. The small windows on the sides of my door are frosted, but above isn't. My neighbors across the street have started leaving their extremely bright exterior lights on at night and it reflects right into my TV, and now with it getting darker earlier, they are turning on their exterior lights around 7:00 right when I start watching TV. Plus, the neighbors have mentioned how they can see my TV pretty well through that window and you can also be seen from outside when you walk up the steps, so you always gotta be wearing pants!

The spray frost seems much easier, I was just wondering how easy it is to get a uniform coat. Is it easy to take off and start over when I mess it up the first time? Below is a pic of the window above the door. It's pretty large with pie shaped cut-outs.

Kev, my mom had the same issue and she had a company come out to look into frosting it. It was very expensive to have them do it, so she started looking into doing it herself, that was when she came across this film version. What I thought was surprising and how we got on this subject. I went see her new home and was looking at the front glass and said "Oh I see the entire front door has the frosted glass". She said "No, only the sides, the glass in the middle is this stuff". Then she pulled it back like this picture.

I was super surprised because it looked like the real deal when its on the glass.

Edit: The picture is not the exact one she got, she found one that matched the same texture as the side windows. I just used this picture because it shows how its cut to fit the window and it just sticks to it. No glue or adhesive is required either. Might be worth checking out as a fast easy fix.

I originally was looking at the film because I figured it would leave a more uniform frost, but mine would require so much cutting because of the pie shaped segments I have. That's a lot of precise cutting, especially around the curve. That's cool that the film just peels right off. So she hasn't had issues with it bubbling from sunlight? I've always wondered if that would happen with film just like bad tint jobs on cars do.

No bubbling because it does not apply like car tint. It is more like a static electric type of hold. You slap it on, it sucks to window like static, then if you want to readjust just pull it up and put it back down.

As far as cutting and applying that is simple. Putty knife + straight edge to push it into your corners then a x-acto knife to cut it precisely to the shape needed or another method, measure one pie then trace it onto a piece of cardboard. Lay your film out and trace it with x-acto knife following your marks-o-lot lines through the see thru tint.

This is my project this weekend. I have the v-groove track, v-groove wheels, and bracing ready to go. Just need to build the door this weekend.

Old barn door style, sliding pantry door.

I used the spray on my front door windows, worked really well and went on even without any effort. Don't remember the brand, either Krylon or Rustoleum, they are probably all the same though.

We have those similar windows around our front door as well and since we couldn't find blinds for it, we went ahead and used the film and it looks great. Just make sure to get a pattern that works for you.

It does take time to get the bubbles out. We ended up buying a squeegee that worked really well.

EDIT: Btw, very nice home, Kevin! @Phobia, wish I was a tenth of the handyman you are. Smh.

Come on Scooby, none of it is difficult or something out of the reach for others. Common sense makes up 90% of it.

My pantry door is 37" wide. Each tongue and groove board is 6" wide, so 5 boards gives me 30", both end boards I'll rip at 4" each to make entire thing 38" wide.

Get some flat iron 1-1/2" wide, use the vice to put some bends, some simple math for bolt lengths to attach to wall, etc. Boom pantry door to stain whatever color you want

I do appreciate the compliment. I just find it funny when people say that kind of stuff because my thought process when I see a group of roofers putting on a roof or a guy building a beautiful piece of furniture is "Hey that guy has two hands just like me, no reason I can't do the same level of work as him". Then I go to Home Depot, come home, get in the shop, and try to impress my wife by being a man man

                          This thread depresses me.

You guys are doing some impressive things with your houses; I'm barely able to mow my yard in straight lines.
