I think the idea is more that a tile bottom is more dependent on quality installation, a cast iron or resin tub is fairly bullet proof, a tile shower has the possibility of being improperly installed and leaking with little warning until you are rotting and moldy.

I've never heard Burns say something false. These words are golden.

I am late to the party, bought our first house on Halloween 2014 but I never saw this thread until now. Our house is a 5 bedroom in a nice neighborhood. As a lifelong renter I never realized a house required so much work on an ongoing basis!!

Tell me about it.... 8/31 was our six year anniversary of living in our house (we moved into a new build) and every few months something happens. We're currently dealing with a slab leak. I guess we caught it early so we didn't have a lot of damage (really just our master closet carpet and a couple of shoe storage shelves).

I've never dealt with a slab leak before, but hopefully it isn't too bad. I'm trying to read up on everything the best that I can. It sounds like we will either have to bust up the slab to repair the leak or reroute the pipe through the attic. Maybe there's a slim chance that the line is clogged and just need to be cleaned out, but I think that's doubtful. The plumber can't make it out until Wednesday morning, so I won't know anything for sure until then.

The good thing is I'm fairly certain is that it's from one of our showers and it's only a small pool of water that comes up and can be wiped away pretty easily. The bad thing is that instead of two showers a day between my wife and I we currently have five showers due to my displaced in-laws living with us for the time being. That's already stressful enough, now I have to deal with this pain in the butt too.

Anyone ever dealt with a shower pan leak?

We had a plumber come out last week and his thoughts were the pan from our guest bathroom shower is leaking rather than a broken pipe under our slab. The problem with that is that we have to have our current bathtub ripped out in order to repair it and I'm not 100% sure if our insurance covers that (we have an adjuster coming out Wednesday).

We also had a leak detection company come out and they think that it's something with the guest shower, as well. So I guess the good news is that we won't have to have the slab jack hammered or anything. The bad news is the shower and the areas that it damaged (master closet carpet, shelving and sheet rock) will have to all be replaced and I'm not sure if it's covered.

I tried a couple of easy fixes first (making sure all of the hardware was tight and re-puttying the drain, but it's still leaking. Also, as long as the person taking a bath/shower in the guest bathroom doesn't take too long, then it doesn't leak... well, not into our closet anyway, I'm not sure what it doesn't inside the walls. Hopefully, we're covered, but I'm preparing myself for the worst.

So much for no problems in a new house. I haven't called a plumber yet but I'm monitoring it. Noticed a damp spot behind the toilet the other day on the tile and baseboard in the master bath. Wiped it up, but it was a little damp again today. Doesn't seem like the toilet is leaking, and the hose for the water comes from the floor, not the wall, so I'm not sure what could be coming from the wall/baseboard that is causing it. No stains on the ceiling below. I know enough of what all went where because I designed the dang thing, but I have no clue what could be causing it.

Found it I think! Back of the tank was a little damp and it felt like one of the (cheap plastic) nuts was loose, the water running and dripping down onto the floor. And it's close enough to the wall to run down the baseboard and onto the floor so it makes sense. Why they use cheap plastic pieces that won't stay tight, I don't know. Testing it now and seeing if it stays dry.

Yea, I've had paper towels down since last night and after multiple flushings, still dry. Been here a year and a half so it must have just gotten loose over time. Annoying, but yea, easy fix. Just need to touch up the baseboard paint because you can tell it's been dripping on it for some time.

speaking of leaks ... beware of samsung fridges. Mine is a french door type, but it doesn't really matter. The defroster has an element in most Samsung fridges that doesn't go enough into the drainage hole which takes the defrosted water down to the evaporator.

I had to look online about this and somebody came today to fix it without the part, so another few days of using towels.

For me it sucks because it started to warp my brand new hardwood floors a bit. Amazing they designed it this way and haven't improved it to their new models even though so many people have had the exact same issue for a while now.

didn't even know it was leaking because the visible water was mostly right under the fridge as it made its way past the freezer and down.

September has been a fun month...

New Stove - Our old one lost its mind and decided it was going to ignore the set temperature and heat up as high as it possibly could. The oven thermometer we have inside for baking was pegged at 650 degrees. Since it was over 8 years old, we decided it wasn't cost effective to fix and splurged a bit for a double oven this go around.

Garage Door Springs - Wife came home after work and garage door wouldn't raise more than a foot off the ground. After looking and inspecting the door for a while, finally realized one of the springs was busted in half. Definitely not something I was going to attempt fixing, so we spent about $300 to have them professionally replaced.

Sprinkler System Damage - Recently dumped cable and switched to Centurylink Gig Fiber for internet. During the initial install, they ran fiber through our yard from their box in the ground to the side of our house but didn't bury it. Finally after a few weeks, one of their contractors came out to bury the line and cracked/smashed two water pipes for the sprinklers while trying to feed the line under a tree root they cut through. Only realized there was damage when there was decent sized hole from when the sprinklers ran and the water had nowhere to go but up and out of the ground. Thankfully after numerous phone calls and claims, the contractor is sending out reimbursement for the damages. In the process of making sure everything was working properly, found 4 sprinkler heads that needed replacing...fun.

New Built-in Microwave Oven - Ended up replacing the original microwave that was installed when house was built in 2004. Years of wear and tear was causing the door handle to crack/split from the door...just a matter of time before the handle was going to come off when the door was opened. It was definitely harder removing the old one than installing the new one. It's amazing how quiet the new one is compared to the old one that sounded like a wind tunnel firing up each time it was used.

Hopefully, October is much less eventful.

Ouch that stinks...In the month of September, we've gotten Blinds, replaced the foyer wood (dogs tore it up, replacing it with porcelain tile), carpeting our riser in the HT and are in the process of getting our built in Microwave replaced as well.

We replaced one of our outside faucets and pipe. We also mounted it. Our AC run-off pipe was emptying out at the base of the house. We dug a trench, ran PVC pipe, and finally have that emptying out away from the house.

Next we will probably replace our attic ladder/steps.
