Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned
I have learned when it comes to kitchen renovations, she's not really asking for my opinion, I'm just a sounding board. It took me a while to grasp this concept, but eventually I learned to give my opinion, then wait to find out why my taste is "outdated" and what she really wants to do. Oh well. She has no say in what tv I'm buying so it's a fair trade.I am the lesson after the fall.Comment

Ugh. Pool motor died again (apparently the crappy home warranty companies would just replace it illegally in the past and I never knew)...Plus our pump is really old, so more just makes sense to replace it with a 1300 variable speed pump/motor that'll save us 30ish a month. The more expensive one pays itself off in 2 years vs. doing the 700 cheaper one.
Sucks, but cost of owning a home.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned
I've never figured out the water or electricity aspect (it's always just been there), but water isn't horrible and our electricity bills (including running the AC a lot in summer) aren't terrible (though summer can get pricey)...
Otherwise I buy a big tub of chlorine tablets at Costco for 80ish bucks and that lasts a while.
Eventually I will need to get the filter checked (or try and replace the sand myself if I get motivated one day....probably require getting a shopvac though), and that'll be 400 bucks unless I do it myself. Otherwise I am able to escape with occasionally paying 20-40 bucks to buy a bunch of chlorine to shock.
I'm really hoping that this new pump/motor keeps my costs down going forward.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned
We put in a pool late last summer. I think we are at about 30-35K gallons. A little on the larger side is what the builder told us. We are like 50' long and anywhere from 15 - 21 feet across. 3.5' in the shallow end and 7.5' in the deep end.
It cost us about $300 for the initial fill and then depending on where you live, you may have to top it off if you go long spells without rain.
In the summer, I estimate it adds about $60-$80 a month to run the filter/pumps. In the winter, it probably drops in half as we don't have to run it nearly as often since algae doesn't grow well when it is cold.
So for electricity, say 7 month at +$75 and 5 months at + $40 = $725 or so per year.
Then you have to add in Chlorine and other chemical costs of a few hundred dollars per year.
We do not have a hot tub and chose not to add a heater to your pool. Adding this and using it would also add some money. I've been told by others that to heat their pool in the winter time can cost a few hundred dollars to do (say you wanted to heat it for a New Year's party or something).
Depending on your state, it could impact property taxes as well if your house is to be assessed to include the added value of the pool.Comment

It is pretty satisfying putting a letter of intent to vacate in the mail because you'll be buying a house. Its a cherry on top when the new house will be 200% better and will still cost less each month.

Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned
Well gentlemen, me and the family lost a ton of our possessions last night during a flood. We're the least likely home to flood, no flood insurance, but weather phenomena happen. My wife had just taken a bunch of stuff to the basement yesterday too.
Tough night. Now we try to salvage whatever keepsakes we can, and then throw out the rest.
Word to the wise, no matter where you look to buy, look into flood coverage.Twitter - WTF_OS

Haha, yeah, the electronics etc was upstairs. Ruined the flooring that we put down, water half way up the walls soaked into the drywall.
A ton of tools, my office supplies and furniture, kids toys and most of our sentimental stuff that we had accumulated through the years. Just a tough blow.
As far as I can tell right now, we have no help. Hopefully something comes throughTwitter - WTF_OS

Since buying this house I've had plenty off issues come up that had to be fixed (approximately 12k+ and counting) but it's just been monetary losses, can't imagine losing stuff like that.Comment

Yeah man, it hurt. Throwing out a ton of stuff today. Papers and pictures that we tried to dry, peeled and ripped apart.
Id give up my possessions gladly to trade for the things we lost. I emptied 98 Shop Vacs full of water, I think 12 gallons per load.
I've left messages with my agent to see if I can claim anything at all.Twitter - WTF_OS

Sorry to hear--tough to lose the things money can't replace.
I'm currently having a house built....hadn't thought about flood insurance (won't be having a basement though).Comment

Re: For all of you guys who are homeowners or newly owned
I know about this kind of loss. Long story short, my family went through a fire that burned the whole house down. Only thing that was saved was some photo albums, my parents wedding portrait, and my mom's jewelry box. Those were the priorities that were within reach, memories and wealth I guess.
I'm sorry you had to go through something like this. Nothing is about this is easy. To this day, I still occasionally remember/think of the littlest most random thing that was lost in the fire. It's probably hard to think this way right now, but in the end it's just stuff. The good thing is you still have the house and you get to get more stuff and make more memories.Oakland Athletics San Jose Sharks
