Re: How much would you tip if you were a millionaire?

This depends. Do they know I'm a millionaire?

In all seriousness, I'm never a cheap bastard when I can afford to give a little. I would leave the waiter/waitress feeling like a million bucks for the rest of the week, even if I don't tip them that much. However, they'd still have to earn it.

I double dated with my buddy and his girl, last weekend. Between myself and the girl I took out, I spent close to $60 on food/drinks.

The service was good, so I tipped all the cash I had in my wallet ($8) and I paid with my debit card. I thought it was pretty decent, considering I'm easy to please in a restaurant. My buddy just matched my $8, so the guy got $16 for being our waiter for an hour.. doesn't sound too bad really.

Depending on the manager, he probably only got $6 out of that $16. Some places the manager takes all tips and give the waiter a percentage of the tip.

          Yes - for nothing.

I'm poor - I go to a restaurant and get a $10.00 meal. The cook makes it. The server brings it. I eat it. I leave a $2.00 tip.

I'm rich - I go to a restaurant and get a $10.00 meal. The cook makes it. The server brings it. I eat it. I leave a $2.00 tip.

Just because I'm rich doesn't mean I owe the server any more. I ordered a meal and from start to finish it's the same regardless of the number I have in my bank account. The server did no more or no less work - they provided the same service as they do everyone else.

It's not like they did anything special to earn more money from me.

That is why I never feel bad leaving a small tip when I do. I know if it's busy that the person is going making going to be making the equivalent to more then $10 an hour. I had a friend that worked at a high end bowling alley and made $200 in one day and bitched about it. I was like wait until you have to work a real job and get paid $9 an hour.

Why tip at all then if it's for nothing?

If you know how it is to be strapped for funds then you know how big of a boost it is to someone if they got even a $10 tip on a $10 tab.

Then again some people are just always gonna be cheap so there is no point in arguing about it on a message board.

You're making an argument out of nothing.

By 'nothing' I was meaning that the service was nothing extraordinary. It was the same service everyone receives. They've literally done 'nothing' to earn extra money. It's not like you walk around with your bank statement stapled to your shirt and the service staff jumps up on the table, giving you strip dances and showering you in diamonds. They bring your food/drink to you like they do everyone else in the same manner.

Being 'cheap' has nothing to do with anything, in this scenario.

20% or whatever the norm is at the place of business. I ain't blowing my millions. I'd still be a tight wad, LOL.

I'm a valet on the Strip. You guys are generous. And I tip too well now, I'd probably tip stupid amounts.

I'd probably tip slightly more than usual...30% Most people don't get rich and stay rich by wasting money.

If I'm going to give it away it would be to a charity, homeless shelter, children's home, etc.

I'd make sure I leave 20% unless service was bad, unless it's a service where there is a different norm for tips like for a caddy or something.

Most people I know that are worth several million didn't get their by wasting money, and don't waste money despite their wealth.

If I was worth millions I'd want to give my money toward causes I care about, not waste it on tips.

I guess if I was well off I would leave 25%. I usually leave 20% standard and 25% or more for great service. If I was well off I guess those numbers would be 25 & 30? Rarely do I tip below 20% but I have in a few occasions.

I think I'd be the opposite. I'd rather know my money is going to some poor college student that will some day put themselves in a position to contribute to society over giving it to a homeless shelter or charity where you aren't really sure who is taking their cut.

Since I am a millionaire though, I would have a chef so my going out would be cut down
