My brother waited on Jason Kidd about 8 years ago in a TGIF, here in Philly. Unfortunately, my brother isn't a basketball fan and didn't realize it was Jason Kidd. So since he was really busy with a lot of tables, he gave one or two tables to someone else who was working. So of course Jason Kidd leaves a $50 tip on a meal that was nothing more than a cheeseburger .

We don't generally tip at all here in Australia as it's not the custom. I don't mind the system though as it should hopefully reward great service and penalize crappy servers.

I'd drop $100 on a tip if the service was outstanding and I was loaded though. Honestly a great waiter / waitress can sometimes make a mediocre dining experience pretty enjoyable if they have great personality etc....

There are way too many variables for me to say how much exactly I would tip.

However, I always base my tips on the amount of quality service I get and how much I spend.

I'm not an idiot nor am I ever bitchy about my food, I just tell it with my wallet. Either way, I'm probably not giving out $100 for a $50 bill.

Do restaurants pay a decent wage there?

Waitresses make like $3 an hour because it's expected that you tip them.

Now if I was a millionaire, I would still tip a $100. I never liked the idea of people thinking just because you have more money then your average person, that you should tip more or buy more.

That stuff annoys the hell out of me and my wife. People see us and always try to get out us to buy more.
You tip $100 no matter what? You wouldn't need to change anything, that's well beyond generous

Yeah I just checked and wages range from $10-$20 per hour on averages for waiters then extra for overtime etc. The obvious draw back of our system is that crappy waiters get paid the same as good ones.

I think tipping isn't expected in most parts of the industrialized world. My mom is from Germany and she didn't know that you were expected to tip when she first moved to the US.

I would tip 50% of the meal for ok service, and 100% for great service.

I used to actually hang with this guy who would tip 100% at places and we would get top notch service every time.

My mother isn't a millionaire, but she makes six figures. She tips the same as if she made 40k a year. (which is about 20-30%) She never flaunts her money ever. She drives a Ford Focus and lives in a 3 bedroom $120,000 house.

As someone who works in the business and makes a good portion of his money on cash tips i might be a bit biased. If i have millions i might as well triple whatever the bill is and leave that as the tip. what am i honestly gonna do with all that money? there is only so much you can spend it on

I'd tip extremely well. Hell... I'm poor as it is now. My bank account is quite often at the 0 line, but I'm alive and could be worse off. Bills take most of that money.

When I can afford to go out, I tip well. Last time I was in Vegas at the rainforest cafe, our bill was like 60. I think I tipped 50 as out waiter was pretty awesome. Funny, helpful, but not overbearing. He sought me out while waiting for my fiancee and told me any time we come back to look for him.

Treat people how you'd want to be treated is how I was raised.
