Wild Animals on the Loose in Ohio

Friend of mine has connects in the sheriffs department, apparently the guy let all the animals loose and shot himself.

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (KABC) -- The entire town of Zanesville, Ohio, was locked down after dozens of wild animals were suddenly let loose.
Forty-eight big animals including lions, tigers, cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, camels and bears ran off from a Zanesville animal farm.
The farm's owner was found dead and the facility's cages left wide open.
One resident took pictures of a bear on her property.
There have been dozens of animal sightings near homes and along freeways.
Authorities on "shoot to kill orders" gunned down one lion.
Police warned people to stay indoors.
"We're going to recommend to a couple of local school districts to probably close tomorrow just for safety reasons of kids standing at the bus stops," said Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz.
Police say they have managed to kill nearly 24 of the animals.
But more remained at large Tuesday night.

That's pretty wild. I'd hate to run into one of those animals while taking out the trash or something.

Why are they just killing the animals? Shouldn't they try to catch them and put them in a rescue/zoo.

        Easier said than done.

Once they're seen they have to put down immediately. You can't risk having those animals attack anyone (or run away) while you're waiting around for an animal control team to show up.

This should be made into a movie.

I feel bad for the wild animals. Been held in captivity all their lives, and just as they're set free... dead.

It's kinda hard to catch animals such as cheetahs, bears, lions, wolves, and tigers in a populated area without endangering humans.

Usually tranquilizers have to be at a specific dosage and a specific drug for the animal being targeted. For this kind of wide spread "release" it'd be really impractical.

It can be done, I have seen it done in large situations before in the past.

This is just a nature of our current fear induced society now.

Acting like something noble was done (due to fear/gung ho/laziness), when your brain can be applied to this situation and things can be organized much more efficiently and safely for the animals and people.

Don't worry everyone, this happened in Central Ohio, thus it will be cleaned up in a matter of hours.

Personally, I think killing them is more humane than sticking them in captivity again.

I can see killing the lions/tigers/etc., but the giraffes? Do they really pose a threat to anybody?

Yes. They are 17 feet tall and weigh almost 2,000 pounds and could probably run down a person.

I wish we had cool animals like this in the wild in the U.S.
