A little off topic, but really?

“I’m 64 years old, and I’ve cried three times in my life: when my kids were born, when my daughter was dying of cancer and when my parents were killed. And last night I probably cried more when I looked at those animals down there,” Hanna said.
His he saying he cried more looking at those dead animals than when his daughter and parents died?

I see no issue with what he said (because I believe I know why and can relate)... and it will probably turn into an ugly debate with spiritual/religion/ethics that are against the TOS here.

It's a damn shame that it had to come down to this.

No ill will towards the people who had to kill these animals. They were put in a nearly impossible situation. I'm sure if they had the means and expertise to put these animals down with tranquilizers or the like, they would have. But with a bunch of wild and dangerous animals running around, they didn't have the time to organize a great effort.

All of my anger is directed towards the crazy person who "freed" all these animals. What are the details on that? He let them go then killed himself, or was killed and the murderer let the animals go? If that person is still alive... he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

This was just a tragic event. If you're going to kill yourself or kill someone else, do your stupid business and leave it at that. It's so sad that these animals had to pay the ultimate price because someone went crazy.

He opened all the pens/cages and then killed himself. If he really loved the animals he would've just let them go. Did he really expect the authorities to just round up 50 deadly animals without resorting to shooting?

I do not think it was a question of love, but rather he obviously did not have a "normal" state of mind to begin with, and thus "letting them go free" was his last ethical and moral "act" before he outed himself.

I could be wrong but I believe that was the monkey that was eaten by one of the other animals.

geez, sounds like this was just a situation of utter pandaemonium over there. I dont know all the circumstances and would never condone killing an animal who hasn't shown outward aggression (like a dog attacking people or something),however it seems like this was a tough decision for them to make. My feelings might be different if I was in Ohio with a house full of kids, or if I was soley responsible for the safety of thousands of people.

My thoughts too. We can talk about how the law is crazy and needs to be changed, but other than that the only blame I see can be pointed at who released the animals. There's really no reason to expect the local authorities to be prepared for something like that, or (even if they are) to have a solution that doesn't end with all the animals alive and no people hurt.

Just came across my facebook... and I agree...

ASPCA Calls for Emergency Order Banning Exotic Pets in Ohio

Schools were closed. Businesses shut down. And the majority of residents stayed locked in their homes as local law enforcement hunted down more than 50 exotic animals—including lions, tigers, wolves and bears—roaming loose on city streets. While this may sound like a scene from a horror movie, it actually took place yesterday in the city of Zanesville, Ohio.

The animals belonged to exotic animal collector, Terry Thompson, who freed them before committing suicide. According to the Muskingum County Animal Shelter, Thompson had a long history of neglecting his animals. Of the 56 roaming animals, only a grizzly bear, two monkeys and three leopards were captured alive.

“We are outraged and horrified by the events that took place in Zanesville,” says Nancy Perry, Senior Vice President of ASPCA Government Relations. “In response, we are strongly urging Governor Kasich to issue an emergency order to prevent any more needless loss of life for released or escaped exotic animals, as well as to ensure the safety of Ohio residents.”

In an official statement made last night, the ASPCA called on Ohio Governor John Kasich and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to restrict the sale and possession of exotic animals. Ohio is currently one of only eight states that do not regulate private ownership of exotic animals.

Since the vast majority of people who keep exotic pets cannot meet their needs, the animals often become the victims of abuse and neglect—they are caged, chained, tranquilized or even beaten into submission. Further, thousands of people are attacked and seriously injured by exotic pets each year.

“The exotic pet trade is a multi-billion dollar industry that contributes to the suffering of millions of animals and endangers countless people,” says Perry. “It needs to end.”

For more information about the exotic pet trade, please visit our Fight Animal Cruelty section.
For the record, I would love to work for the ASPCA in law enforcement.
