    Best Championship Performances

With Albert Pujols' un-be-lievable display tonight/last night, it got me thinking about the all-time great championship game performances. Could either be a Super Bowl or other single title game (World Cup, Euro Cup, Champions League, BCS Title, College Basketball Championship, final tennis match, etc) OR a performance in one game of a championship series (NBA Finals, World Series, Stanley Cup).

What do you guys think? Pujols has to be up there.

The game Pujols had last night is up there for sure. Another one that immediately comes to mind when I think of incredible championship performances is Steve Young in Super Bowl 29 where he tossed 6 touchdown passes. I've only seen the highlights from that game, but my goodness what a performance.

As it should be. MJ was amazing. 6 NBA Finals appearances, 6 NBA Finals victories, 6 NBA Finals MVP trophies.

Tim Thomas, goalie for the Boston Bruins, this past Stanley Cup Finals. 8 goals allowed in a 7 game series, two shutouts including one in the decisive Game 7. He allowed 1 goal in Game 1 with like a minute left, too.

I saw JS Giguere's run to the Cup Finals in 2003 with Anaheim and I thought that was incredible. Mike Leighton had a couple shutouts for the Flyers in their run up to the Cup Finals in 2010. But Tim Thomas was absolutely sublime. Greatest goaltending performance I've seen.

As far the NBA Finals go, how about D-Wade in the 2006 Finals vs. Mavs. For the series, Wade averaged 34.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.7 steals. I'm a Bulls fan and love MJ, but I gotta give Wade his respect for that performance.

I get that Pujols hit 3 HRs and drove in 6 runs last night.. but it's not like he was the only one that put on a display last night. The Cardinals scored 16 runs. Without Pujols, they still win 10-7.

Beltre's 3 HR performance vs. the Rays in the Divisional series was much more impressive to me because he was the difference in a 4-3 win.

Steve Young/Jerry Rice combo in Super Bowl XXIX.

Young threw 6 TDs, 3 of them to Rice.

And MJ's body of work in the Finals will never be matched. I mean, what one moment can you pick? The Magic shrug after the 3's against the Blazers? Flu game? Game winning shot against the Jazz? It defies all explanation other than he's simply the best you'll ever see when the chips are down.

                        He definitely set records.

                        Free throws ftw.

If we're talking about the entire series, the best Stanley Cup Final goalie performances I've seen are: Thomas (2011), Hextall (1987), Roy (2001).

If we're talking about a single game in the Stanley Cup Final, I'm going with this one:

                              <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XEgrFCIJPvo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Homer pick, but hey, the shots were 54-31 (17-8 in OT)!

HM goes to Dominik Hasek's pinch-hit performance for the Blackhawks in Game 4 of the 1992 SCF. Eddie Belfour had allowed cringe-worthy goals of the kind that would make even Luongo turn away from in embarrassment. With the score tied at 3-3 in the 2nd period, Chicago yanked the Eagle in favour of their little-known Czech backup...
