That kind of means nothing though, a lot of things are misnamed or miscategorized. I don't put any stock into being called "cake".

anyway, I'll just put this here.

      A cheesecake is a sweet, cheese-based pudding.

Cheesecake is one of the most common puddings in the world and perhaps one of the oldest involving dairy other than milk. The first recorded mention of cheesecake was during the ancient Grecian Olympic games in the occidental world. Cato the Elder wrote of cheesecake preparation in his farming manual "De Agri Cultura".

Cheesecakes can be made of ricotta cheese, havarti, quark, twaróg, or, more usually, cream cheese. Other ingredients such as sugar, eggs, cream and fruit are often mixed in as well. Flavorings such as vanilla or chocolate may be added, and a fruit topping, like strawberries, is frequently added. Typically, the cheese filling or topping covers a crust, which may be pastry, cookie, digestive biscuit or graham cracker-crumb. Sometimes the base is a layer of cake.

Contrary to what its name suggests, cheesecakes are actually more like custards and are required to be baked at lower temperatures. A common difficulty with baking cheesecakes is its tendency to "crack" when cooled. This is due to the coagulation of the beaten eggs in its batter. There are various methods to prevent this. One method is to bake the cake in a hot water bath to ensure even heating. Alternatively, a little cornstarch blended into the batter prevents the coagulation of eggs.

In the UK, cheesecakes are generally a cold dessert which is not cooked nor baked. It is made with crumbled digestive biscuits mixed with butter and pressed into a dish to form a base layer. The topping or filling is a mixture of milk, sugar, cheese, cream and gelatin.

Some cultures believe it is bad luck to have cheesecake served at one's wedding, though it is unknown where this tradition started.C

The word cheesecake is also used to describe the creamy, cheesy flavor of the cake. In this usage, there are cheesecake yogurts, ice creams, brownies, and cookies.

There are also savory cheesecakes, often flavored with blue cheese and served as hors d'oeuvres or accompanying salads.
Anyway, from what I've seen and read It's closer to a pie than a cake, so pie shall now receive my vote.

This is the real answer. Cheesecake is easily the greatest.

Tomato is a fruit. When's the last time you had a fruit salad with tomato in it?

Less closer than I expected... The name of Cheesecake really isn't a huge thing, if you think about it. Otherwise, what would Hot Dogs be made of?

                  Re: Cheesecake: Pie or Cake

I actually came into this thinking easily cake, right? You wouldn't think there'd be much to debate, but after using some critical thinking and doing some research, I'm positive it's more pie than anything else.

It depends. I have seen it served as a pie and as a cake. Don't really care. I just like to eat it.

                      Ditto.

When's the last time you had cake with a pie crust?

To me, that crust alone is enough to qualify it as a pie. Add in the fact that there is no flour, and I'm quite certain it's more of a pie than a cake.

What kind are you eating? I've never had a cheesecake that wasn't in a tin mold with crust.

Yup, it's pie to me. I've never had a cake like cheesecake. But I have had a pie like cheesecake.

Cheesecake isn't good without a crust, either. So I guess the crust-less cheesecake can be cake, the crusted cheesecake is pie.
